Robbie Williams is a great performer

I never paid any attention to Robbie Williams in the 90’s or since, and have always wondered about his enduring popularity. Well, today I watched his opener for the Australian Rules Grand Final and was super impressed with what a professional performer he is. He had 20 minutes and he gave it everything.
He also seemed to be having a great time. The costuming, the lights, the choice of songs- perfect for what he was supposed to be doing.
I’m really impressed. He’s a great entertainer.

Considering he isn't a great singer he knows how to put on show agreed

BudgetBlast · 24/09/2022 21:41

I’ve seen him loads of time but I don’t think I’ve ever paid for tickets to see just him. Once he wasn’t great which he fully acknowledged other than that he was incredibly entertaining.

NanaNelly · 24/09/2022 21:51

He’s fabulous!

I saw him live in 2011 when he joined TT on the Progress tour and he was brilliant. It was like 3 shows in one, the 4 piece TT, followed by RW, followed by all 5. It is one of the best shows I have ever been to, especially as the Pet Shop Boys were support act.

RW is a great entertainer.

I can't stand him.
I'm a huge TT fan and I hated how he made that tour the Robbie show.
We were right at the front and happened to be in wee crowd of people who also disliked him so that was nice, solidarity!

waterlego · 24/09/2022 22:08

I’ve never been a fan and wouldn’t listen to his music when I’m just going about my day, as I find his style of music rather bland.

However, I went to one of his gigs a few years ago in Dublin and it’s probably in my top ten. He is- as you say- very entertaining! I was not bored at any point. He really engaged with the crowd, generated excitement, and gave everything to his performance. Many of his songs sounded better live than recorded.

I’ve seen other artists whose music I absolutely love but have sometimes come away disappointed as their live performance didn’t match up to their recordings, or they showed no interest in the audience etc. Or they look really bored and pissed off at having to perform the crowd-pleasing hit songs that made them famous in the first place!

Robbie was brilliant and I’d see him again.

imsanehonest · 24/09/2022 22:12

Gary, is that you?

JohnsShirt · 24/09/2022 22:13

I'm seeing him on tour next month, can't wait.

TheFormidableMrsC · 24/09/2022 22:17

He's brilliant live, an epic entertainer! I've seen him so many times but my favourite being Knebworth which is on my doorstep. That was a fabulous day. I love him.

I think that’s the tour I saw, my mate ended up with a spare ticket.

Irritated me loads of the show was Robbie’s solo stuff, wasn’t what I was expecting, most of the others had solo songs they could’ve done too, typically Knobby show off 😆

TheFormidableMrsC · 24/09/2022 22:19

To add, my Dad says he has serial killer eyes. He's 83. I refuse to listen.

I saw him at the Roundhouse in London years ago and was astonished that he had all the words of his songs on a teleprompter. Even Angels!

That's common for most performers, whether in paper on the floor behind a speaker, or via teleprompter type technology. You usually can't see it but occasionally, depending where you are stood or sat, you can see parts of it.

It's not because the artists don't know the words. It's also for the backing singers and dancers, musicians and stage hands who,use the words for cue pro,pts for other stuff happening.

It also means that if there is a stage distraction mid song where they need to stop singing, but the music goes on, then it's much easier and quicker to re-find their place in the song, so better for all.

He’s always irritated me, even in the 90s - I’m 44 so should be prime Robbie loving but I honestly can’t stand him.

Accidentally saw him at V once, and some mates had a spare Take That ticket a few years ago and he weirdly had a whole section for his solo songs 🙄 Nah, not for me.

It wasn't weird. It was very much the plan as it wasn't 'just' a TT show and wasn't advertised as such, it was a reunited TT and RW show. It was split into 3 sections: 4 piece TT, solo RW and then 5 piece TT.

As I say, a mate had a spare ticket, I didn’t look that deeply into it.

Other members had solo songs too and didn’t do them, which would’ve made more sense if the concept was an overview of their career (which should’ve started with 5 piece TT if that’s what they were getting at).

Probably wouldn’t have bothered if I’d realised, I just went to the bar and stocked up on beers when he was on instead 😁

Cherryana · 25/09/2022 11:58

I saw him live back in the day probably about 1998-ish and was right at the front. Anyway, it ended and the girl in front of me, got ‘invited’ backstage.

And I know it’s seedy, and horrible but 19 year old me would have loved to have been the one to be picked!! Probably dodged an STI though!!

AuntyMabelandPippin · 25/09/2022 12:03

I was too old to be a Take That fan, but I love Robbie. I've seen him twice, and both times he was great, though I could have done without the girls flashing their boobs when he asked them too at the first one in 2000.

Second one was after Swing When You're Winning came out, absolutely fabulous night. Much more sedate, if you can ever call Robbie sedate. 😂

Iheartgeraniums · 25/09/2022 12:25

I have to agree, am not a RW fan at all but went to live 8 (is that what it was called) with a friend and it was literally a-lister after a-lister shuffling on and off and after several hours it was all a bit whatever Madonna, Brad, Chris Martin wailing conscientiously etc and the crowd was f l a g g i n g and then on bobbed RW and that man had the whole place on their feet and laughing and engaged again, it was surreal. Like I say I could think of nothing worse than having to sit through his solo album on my own, but he is a great entertainer.

The BEST, though, is Dolly Parton.

MenopauseSucks · 25/09/2022 12:51

@teaandtoastwithmarmite

I saw the same tour!
I thought TT to begin with were quite pedestrian & a bit boring really..
Then Robbie hit the stage & the crowd went nuts! It was bloody amazing & when the rest of TT joined him, the atmosphere remained electric for the rest of the concert.

Oh and his Dad and Bessie mate used to come on stage with him in Dublin and it was all good craic.

mac1974 · 25/09/2022 13:29

I agree. I was never a massive fan but I ended up seeing him in concert years ago and developed a massive crush! Very charismatic. It was an amazing show.

Hotandbothereds · 25/09/2022 13:51

@Iheartgeraniums I 100% agree, I saw her at Glastonbury and she’s without doubt the best performer I’ve ever seen 😊

waterlego · 25/09/2022 16:19

@BudgetBlast, yes his Dad came on and duetted with him. Was really sweet.
