How much cash to take to New York?

Off to New York in a few weeks. Just wondering how much cash I should take. It's years since I've been to the states but I think most places take card? What about cabs? Are they still cash only?

I'm not asking about overall spending money, just what proportion of it/ how much cash? We're going for 5 days, usual tourist stuff.

My mum's got a serious phobia of public transport, hence the cabs. I did subway most of it last the I went, though to be honest we mainly walked and think we will this time once we get to the hotel.

Id try and persuade her to use the airport train at least as it drops you at the correct terminal. It was two trains from port authority bus station. It's really not like the subway of the 1980's she's thinking of.

She doesn't use public transport in the UK either!
