Living without fridge for a few days

In fact could be a month how do I cope? New home if I could get just a little fridge for now it would help but need a bed first. I’ve powered milk. Marmite on toast or honey. I can live with, tinned curry etc tinned veg as well. Any other ideas. (Later on I want a separate tall freezer the kitchen only has room for under counter fridge so that going to be separate a frost free one but this way down the line once UC is sorted fingers crossed)

Stalk Olio app listings. People advertise all sort on there free.
Next door app often has people asking if anyone has items they no longer need, that might be worth a go.

Tinned meals seem really expensive. Have you had a referral for a food bank?
Pasta can be made with veg, red lentils for protein, a tin of toms & mixed dried herbs.
jacket potatoes and beans is a meal.
Eggs don’t need to be stored in a fridge and are a good source of protein -omelet, scrambled eggs on toast, frittata.
Tinned tuna for pasta bake or top a jacket potato.

I grew up without a fridge.

Milk was kept in a bucket of water and only bought in small amounts as it went off.

We had a larder for meat and cheese but it was only a couple of degrees cooler than the kitchen.

Tinned veg? You don't need to keep veg in the fridge, and you can buy meat on the day you wish to use it.

Having said that, I would love off tinned currys forever if I could.

Might be worth asking around if anyone has a spare. Even those novilty beer fridges would be handy. Amazing what people have in the back of the shed.

If not, you'll just have to pop to the shops a bit more frequently I guess? Do you have a sink/large bucket you could fill with water just to keep unopened packets a bit cooler? Also, is there a fridge in your workplace you could store a few days of lunches?

Thankfully the weather is a bit more on your side than it would have been last month.

Try to see it as a bit of an adventure?! Congrats on your new home.

Do you have any local facebook groups in your area to join. Ask on there if anyone is giving away a free fridge. Or try local charities like Salvation Army or British Red Cross, they often have white goods. We didn’t have a fridge when kitchen was being replaced. I used to shop daily for food for that day only.

It depends what country you are in and which season. If you're in the uk use a sealed box in the shade outside. I lived off grid without a fridge for years. Milk can be kept in a bucket of cold water. Go vegetarian.

Milk in a cool bag with ice. Most stuff like butter and cheese is fine out if the fridge. It's only meat you need to worry about. I would just make veggie curry or pasta veg dishes. Jacket potatoes and tuna etc.

We didn’t have a fridge when we were first married and had a grotty flat in a grotty area. I remember coming back and finding some meat with maggots in it! Don’t leave anything uncovered. Try and leave as much as you can outside now the autumn is approaching. Make sure you cover everything well. Of course try and buy everything fresh

Tinned tuna.

Can you borrow a cooler and buy ice? Even for 2 days a week so you can have some more variety to your meals for that time.

If you buy small portions of veges and shop every day or every second day they should last ok.

Can you eat breakfast at work and store milk in the fridge there?

Food survives for a while without a fridge.

We have been camping and spent 10 days with no fridge in a warm environment.

Luckily we had shops nearby and used a coolbox.

Always4Brenner · 24/09/2022 13:33

I feel lots better now happy to go veggie for a bit I don’t eat that much meat and can live without it.
