Dropped my keys down a water thing - what do I do?

OP posts:
Antarcticant · 24/09/2022 12:19

Water thing? You mean a drain? Can you see them to fish them out - you could use (e.g.) a straightened out wire coat hanger?

MumofSpud · 24/09/2022 12:20

Like the idiot I am I have parked over it a bit
Oh and house keys are on the chain

MumofSpud · 24/09/2022 12:20

Am not panicking

OP posts:
Antarcticant · 24/09/2022 12:20

Can you move your car out of the way?

MumofSpud · 24/09/2022 12:21

The keys I have dropped are the house and the car keys

OP posts:
Antarcticant · 24/09/2022 12:21

Right, so if you can see your keys you need to find something to fish them out with - can you phone someone to bring you something?

FaazoHuyzeoSix · 24/09/2022 12:21

Can you see them or are they under water? Maybe call the council?

itsthesoundofthepolice · 24/09/2022 12:23

Might be awkward with your car over it but you should be able to prise open the drain then you need something to fish them out. A wire coat hanger may work depending how deep the drain is.

MrsMoastyToasty · 24/09/2022 12:24

Is it on your property or is it a kerbside one?

If it's a kerbside one ring the council and tell them that it's fallen down a gully drain (that's the correct terminology). They will probably need to send a couple of blokes out with a tool to lift the grating.

MumofSpud · 24/09/2022 12:29

Yes I am going to ring the council (oh god on a Saturday!)

Gully drain sounds better than a water thing that I have been using

Since its a weekend can you knock on the nearest house (or shop) and ask if they have anything suitable? To be completely sextet this is something men get very excited about.

Otherwise do you have AA? Depending on policy they might help?

Antarcticant · 24/09/2022 12:38

Ooh, not just men - I love this kind of problem and I'm female. I'd help the OP like a shot!

MumofSpud · 24/09/2022 12:50

I have a new neighbour who is a bit of a hoarder - he has recently put lots of stuff outside his house so he is bound to have sth I can use.
So I have gone round and the fire brigade is there!

OP posts:
MumofSpud · 24/09/2022 12:52

Update: v nice fireman came round and had a good look
But advised just to get a new key Sad so will have to wait to get in the house to find one but it is my husband's car so he can't know what I have done as he is v sick in hospital at the mo

OP posts:
Pixiedust1234 · 24/09/2022 13:19

well ...hes not a very good fireman then. No problem solving techniques at all Sad

So , no fishing rod, coat hanger, magnets, big hitting stick?

He said that they could get the cover up but they had no local 'fishing' equipment as the keys would be in 2/3 feet of water and he wouldn't recommend doing that as there would be loads of needles / diseases in the water
I was a bit Shock at the needles bit but felt it certainly wasn't my place to argue
Also I got a bit scared at the diseases comment as DH has no immune system at the mo so I am a bit over sensitive re germs!
He said if it was a person / pet in the drain then they would get something
I am just hoping i can find a spare key in the houseConfused

What about one of those grabber sticks, someone will have one (she said hopefully) if your in the new forest I'll help you.

Aargh thanks - am no where near there! But I think that will have to be my plan c if I can't find a spare key / replace it

I don't even know where to start looking for a service book

AriettyHomily · 24/09/2022 13:51

Put a hour out on local Facebook to see if anyone does magnet fishing and could lend you their magnet?

Pixiedust1234 · 24/09/2022 13:54

Ah didn't realise they were underwater. Our gullies drain away properly otherwise midges would breed (unless its been raining very recently).

Anyone got a fish tank or been to the beach lately? A kids fishing net would be ideal (or a pet shop nearby?)

MumofSpud · 22/10/2022 16:22

Update: I got them!
I went into a Pound shop to get a fishing net but ended up with a litter picker thing

DS took the grate thing off - rummaged for about 2 mins and pulled them up! Grin
They are washed and now in bleach - the nice Timpsons key man said that he can have a look and see if he can get the remote thingy working again
Much better than the £434 quoted for a completely new one

I've been wondering what happened. Awesome update 🙂

MargaretThursday · 22/10/2022 17:57

Dm did that once. She was peering down when a workman came up behind, pulled the cover off, fished the keys out and walked off to her cries of thanks.

That was 4 years ago. We still remind Dm not to park over drains.

MargaretThursday · 22/10/2022 17:57

40 years ago. Not 4...
