Paediatric Movicol

DS is constipated and the doctor has given us paediatric Movicol. The instructions say to use 62.5ml of water with each sachet.

DS has SEN and GDD and will only drink certain things. I added a sachet to 62.5ml of his milk and it’s awful. It’s a real bitter taste. Is it better in juice? I’ve just put some more milk in it for now and he hasn’t noticed and has now drank it.

Can you add more liquid than what it says? As that’s the only way I can see him taking it. I’m hindsight I should of asked the doctor or the pharmacist, and I will but being the weekend I can’t until Monday.

I found this useful when I was trying to puzzle it all out OP: www.eric.org.uk/pdf-how-to-use-macrogol-laxatives
Hope the movicol does the trick.

Yes as long as it is made up with the 62.5 mls of water you can dilute it further

DinaofCloud9 · 23/09/2022 19:35

Yes you can. You can get different flavours too but DS wasn't fussed on them.

Thank you so much for your quick replies. The link is extremely helpful too!

Its been 4 days now and I think it’s more fear as he does suffer with quite hard stools.

It's best to add it to water rather than milk so squash would work fine, you can also make it in jellies or lollies if it makes it easier, hopefully they'll soon get used to the taste

WestIsWest · 23/09/2022 19:41

It has to be mixed with plain water first. Then you can add any other liquid to that. So you could add it to a big drink of milk once it’s dissolved in the 62.5mls of water.
My eldest always had it mixed into milk at bedtime when he was a toddler, now has Vimto in it instead. My youngest will only drink it if it’s got loads of extra water added or mixed in chocolate milk.
How many sachets did they prescribe? I’d ask about increasing it if he’s still not gone in 4 days.

cookiecreammmpie · 23/09/2022 19:45

I used to mix it with juice for my ds. The chocolate flavour one is a bit sweeter. The doctor told me I could do 2 sachets in one go now and again and this seemed to do the trick when be was really struggling. Just don't go over the amount they can have in one day according to the pack instructions.

Our paediatrician told us to use water not milk. Then you can add some squash and as much extra water as you like.
You can also make it in to jelly.
You can give more than 1 dose at a time too as long as your daily dose is reached.

Floydthebarber · 23/09/2022 19:57

Juice would work. Make it with the amount of water then add to more liquid. We could only get the chocolate one when dd1 started having it and had to add it to milkshakes. The we needed to up the dose anyway and I went to so many chemists to try and get the plain ones!

Turtles4543 · 23/09/2022 19:59

We put it in a smoothie (a carton)

ThorsMistress · 23/09/2022 19:59

Thanks all. I will add it to water first tomorrow and then add more juice. A friend suggested getting him to drink it down fast and then have some normal juice. The problem with that is that he doesn’t understand that request

It tastes better very cold and some kids are happier drinking it through a straw because you can’t taste it as much. I didn’t even tell mine when they were little, just gave them their drink as normal.

I have had years of this my son has severe autism and learning disabilities and chronic constipation, getting him to drink movicol is a challenge so much so he gets it at his special school as he won't drink it at home, whilst movicol is really good if your son won't take maybe ask about sodium picolax,I add it to my sons drink, and the dose is 5-10 mls.

RoxieLoxy · 23/09/2022 22:46

My DD has ASD and has Movicol daily. As PPs have said, it must be diluted in plain water first (or it won't work properly). I then just add squash. She can never taste whether Movocol is in there or not. You can just make the juice a bit stronger if needed but it should hide the taste even if its just the same strength as he's used to.
