Stupid Question about unauthorised absence for holiday

MickeyMouseEars · 23/09/2022 16:41

We're going on holiday next month which will mean a week off school for DS. We've had the holiday request form back today which has, unsurprisingly, been denied. What do we do when we go away? I assume it's not the norm to call in every day whilst on holiday. Do we just hand in a letter closer to the time to say that he will be off from x date until x date?

TIA

I’d do nothing. You’ve told them you’re going on holiday.

GreenManalishi · 23/09/2022 16:57

They're aware that you're going, unless they think because they've denied the absence you won't go. I would do nothing other than brace for the fine, depending on the school/LA, and have a lovely time!

Hoppinggreen · 23/09/2022 16:57

I would send a letter saying he won’t be in and then cross your fingers you dont get a fine.
If you do then pay up and don’t whine about it

Ilostmysocks · 23/09/2022 16:59

Lol they know you'll be on holiday, and it'll be marked as unauthorised so don't lie.

You may even get a fine due to new rules.

I’d let the teacher know out of courtesy in case the message from the office that you’re going away hasn’t got through to her.

Oh, sorry if I wasn't clear, I have no intention of lying/pretending he's off for something else. I just wasn't sure if they would put 2 and 2 together, but it seems that the general consensus is that completing the initial request form is enough

Thank you, yes this is a good idea

Factor the fine into into your holiday. It's 60 quid per kid per parent or some shite like that.

Oh, I'm confident that we'll get a fine! I probably will moan about it (privately) though as this was a trip cancelled due to lockdown, which would have taken place before DS started school. All other holidays since have been taken in school holidays but due to the nature of this one (for MIL's milestone birthday and arranging alongside the wider family), we've had to take it over October half term plus a week after. We're not even saving any money to (self) justify the fine 😢BUT we are lucky to be going away at all, so I will take the fine on the chin and pay up without a fuss

You have made the right decision to accept the fine with a good grace.

Galliano · 24/09/2022 10:13

How old is DS…vague feeling he won’t be fined if in reception as it can’t yet be the term after he’s 5?

Pumpkinpatchlookinggood · 24/09/2022 10:17

Our local secondary school rang my friend daily whilst abroad.. She got up every morning to a vm. Due to time difference they were still asleep for the call!

Yes.
I don’t have an issue with people doing a term time holiday in some cases. What pisses me off is the lying about it, trying to claim it’s unavoidable and then whining about how unfair the fine is.
You know the rules, if you break them suck it up
