Energy supplier now partner has left

sandytoes91 · 23/09/2022 06:54

Hoping for some guidance as my partner has
moved out of our home... the gas and electricity was one of his responsibilities when organising bills etc, so the account is in his name and he intends to transfer to his new house.

I have been on comparison websites as well as a few suppliers sites, only to find that there seems to be no way to sign up with anyone for energy at the moment.

Does anyone have any idea what i could do?
Thank you so much in advance

You’ll need to ring some of them to ask for a quote. The Guardian ran a piece about this recently, but annoyingly I can’t find it at the moment. I had to ring Octopus about my own account yesterday and was pleasantly surprised by how quickly they picked up. The below code will get you £50 off (and me as well) if you do go with them, but obviously ring a couple of providers for quotes.

good luck!

He can’t “transfer” as such. He can carry on with the same supplier but they will also remain your supplier.

Ring them and ask for the details to be changed. It might involve a small amount of hassle but it'll be an everyday thing for them

Your partner might find he has the harder time as he'll be starting as a new customer. He mustn't realise that you cant do a transfer.

I would just put the account in your name and stick with your current supplier. Check usage, current DD and do some calculations - you need to work out your annual usage and how much you will need to pay with the new rates from 1st October.

Once suppliers have set their rates (not all have yet) and start to offer fixed term deals, the market will open up. There's not a lot to be gained by switching yet.

He can take his account with him to the new property. OP will probably have to set up a new account with the supplier of her choice. She should make sure it's a price capped tariff and not an expensive fixed tariff she chooses

here’s the article. It says they have to take new customers are part of their operating T&C but some are swerving the obligation a bit.

They aren't going to cut you off the day he moves out. Get a reading on the day, let the supplier know and then they will continue to supply you on a new account. Once that is established you can look at switching if you want. I can't imagine there will be many offering deals at less than the current price cap, so you won't be losing out in the short term.

whenever I've moved house, whoever the incumbent supplier was has to keep supplying the house.

Iwantitidontwantit · 23/09/2022 07:58

As above OP, this will be a change of tenancy, so the supply remains with the existing supplier, albeit a new account in your name. You are then free to change suppliers, if you can find one. Remember to take meter readings when he goes and take photos, to ensure your sole responsibility starts from your readings only.

Aa mentioned above, its the same process as if you'd just moved in. You have to stay with same supplier, until you have another lined up. Swapping isn't very easy right now.
