Orthodontists - can you self-refer?

Hello. DD (15) thinks her teeth stick out, and is asking me to take her to an orthodontist in case she needs braces. The dentist has explicitly said that she didn't think that was necessary (at appointment less than 6 months ago). If she really wants to go, can I self-refer her, or do I need her to be referred by the dentist? TIA

You can self refer, they’re a business at the end of the day! You’ll just have to pay for the consultation

My dentist does orthodontics at their practice (private) so you can just book an appointment.

If you have an nhs referral you will likely be waiting years. Just find a private orthodontist

Great - thank you @Dannexe @Findahouse21 @YerAWizardHarry - I'll go private and self-refer. Thanks for your help.

The orthodontic waiting list near us is up to 4 years long! My dd has been seen and apparently doesn't qualify as they say her teeth issues are just cosmetic.
So, I phoned a few orthodontists and while their waiting lists are years long, we can go next week if we are prepared to pay!
It looks like that is what we'll have to do.

As long as you’re willing to pay. One of my kids had Invisalign privately instead of metal braces.
