Beth/Elizabeth on bank account?

Hi all, I have a daughter named Beth; everybody knows her as Beth including school, but her legal name on her passport and birth certificate is Elizabeth.
We are just about to open her first proper bank account, e.g. with a debit card etc and I'm not sure which name to use. If they only accept Elizabeth, will she have problems paying in cheques etc where inevitably she might be named as Beth? I've never had this problem as my parents sensibly chose a simpler name! Thanks

Is she likely to receive many cheques? They seem to be dying out a bit.

I am known by my middle name and if I have a cheque just saying my middle name and surname it gets refused now. It’s a total pain.

It’s not just cheques - internet banking will get confused too. She will have to get use to explaining that I’m know as Beth but my birth certificate says Elizabeth.

Do her real name as per her birth certificate they will identity check her so you want it to match.

And as she gets older she might keep the account and it will need to be used for more and more official purposes.

I would have thought that the bank would insist on her full name as stated on her birth certificate and passport, as they will need to use those as identity. My son has a 'classic' name on his birth certificate and passport, but he is known as a derivative in real life – he's never been known as his 'proper' name. When we opened a bank account for him recently, we had to use his full name as listed on his birth certificate.

Full name, it will be id checked. We all have to give out the name on our account every time we give out the details now anyway and cheques are disappearing fast.

Got to keep it official for banking stuff - especially when the abbreviation doesn't start with the same letter. It's not like it's two different identities, where somebody has changed from a name they hate or has always been known by everybody her whole life as Joyce when her real (birth cert) name is Edith: most people would assume that a Beth's official name is Elizabeth (or possibly Bethany) anyway - it's not going to make them gasp in surprise and demand to know the full fascinating story.

The bank account should be in her correct birth name, so Miss E Smith rather than Miss B Smith.

I know several people who are known by their middle names but their bank accounts still have their correct birth name on there.

A bank account is an official thing that needs forms of ID to open, so it will all have to match.

If she receives online payments she just needs to give them the name on the bank account and most people ask for that now anyway due to the bank payment rules changing.

It's not difficult to ask for a cheque to be made payable to your initials, and anything official should be in her correct name anyway.

Full name always

riotlady · 22/09/2022 17:39

This is very similar to my name- I use my full name for bank account as sometimes you need to show ID and want it to match. Family members close enough to be giving her cheques will know her full name, official cheques like tax rebates will be in her full name anyway

I am Elizabeth. But known as Beth. My employer has been paying Beth for a decade without any problems. But my bank is in my legal full name. These days, anyway, I think computers and not people do everything and I'm not sure they are smart enough to spot the difference!
