How on earth can one fund retraining/postgrad study?!

Advice on mumsnet frequently seems to be to ‘retrain’ when one is unhappy with their job. Great idea, I know exactly what I want to do but cannot fathom how it would be affordable.

I have an BSc and work in a profesional NHS role. I would like to do a Masters in Social Work. In order to do this, I need to undertake two years of full time study with placements. I don’t live in an area where the LA funds training places and can’t move (small children, DH’s job etc, social circle/family all here etc.). There is a small bursary available for some students but it barely covers tuition fees, let alone living costs. You can’t have both a student loan AND a bursary. The student loan is also meagre.

I’m stuck in a position where I’m doing a job that is making me unhappy, can’t face working extra hours (and with additional childcare costs it’s not really worth my while anyway), we just about make ends meet (bills and mortgage paid, food on the table, and a very small amount of disposable income), but don’t want to go for a promotion as it would mean more stress for approximately £1k PA (I’m at the top of band 6 currently).

So basically I have to stick it out at my current job, which I resent, because there is nothing I can do that pays as well, and hope that a distant relative leaves me a massive inheritance? I feel so trapped.

DH earns similarly to me and is doing a MSc through OU so it’s much more flexible. He has a student loan to cover fees. He’s self employed and works really hard. There isn’t any more he could be doing to support me/the family than he already is before anyone suggests it!!

See if the course you want to do is available in apprenticeship form. Apprenticeships are fully funded by the employer from their apprenticeship levy fund. I am doing a technical MSc to reskill as an apprenticeship.

I got the NHS bursary when I did mine which covered fees, and a small bursary from the uni plus their access fund to live on, I also got tax credits and a bit of housing benefit (which I guess would be universal credit now).

I did my master's part time over three years while working full time. I paid for it with a postgraduate student loan.

Bank loans. Credit cards. Or study part time while working, cut back on spending and pay out of your wages. Some lucky people get courses paid for by employers.

I don’t know the answer for your exact situation. (I took the Government Postgrad Loan and had a small scholarship from my institution. Arts, nothing to do with NHS. The rest was a bit of a scrabble.)

But if you scour all the relevant threads on the Mature Study & Retraining Board you may find some ideas you hadn’t thought of.

I worked full time and work paid (. Nhs), so I suppose for retraining in an affordable way, you might be better looking for something with your same employer. Stating the obvious your £1000 pa pay rise is just for your first year, you will continue to get early pay rises for a bit if you go for your band 7. I wouldn't say my band 7 role is more stressful than when I was a band 6, just more specialised

LunaLoveLemon · 22/09/2022 19:05

@Duolingolater I actually got a band 7 role and it was completely different to the job I was promised, with so many management issues and bullying from another band 7 that I stepped down. I don’t feel like it’s worth it for something that I don’t really want to do anymore.

did you manage to retrain?
I'm looking at the same.
I just realised it's been 11 years since I started thinking about it, what a waste of time. I just can't afford it also.
