Help with London tube in a wheelchair

Despite having a free bus pass, I think the easiest way for me to get to Victoria coach station from Mile End will be the tube. However, I havent been to London in a while but the last time I was there, there were no lifts at Mile End. Is that still the case does anyone know? If so, where would be the nearest accessible tube station that goes to Victoria please?

Thanks @Stretchandsnap if I am reading that map correctly then Mile End is now step free!

I read it as it Mile End isn’t accessible but you can step free interchange and you need a ramp at Victoria - you might be better going to Whitechapel for access but still will need a ramp at Victoria

See, this is why I asked for help, I am clueless at reading maps Blush

Yes Mike End isn't step free, Bromley by Bow or Whitechapel would be the closest.

You might already know this but the coach station is about 10 minutes walk from Victoria tube station, it's definitely not next door!

Mile end isn't accessible. You need to look for the stations that have a wheelchair picture on them. A blue background means no steps at all, a white background means there's a step from the platform to the train. Whitechapel is a couple of stops down from mile end on the district line and is accessible, bromely-by-bow is a couple of stops up and is also accessible.

You can download an app called "tube map" and you can click on specific stations on the map and bring up the accessibility info. It tells me that mile end has "23 steps down from the street to the ticket hall area". The app is very annoying with loads of ads but has helpful info.

Ahh, for some reason I thought that if a tube station on the step free tube map wasn't dulled then that meant it was accessible. I have just discovered the 2nd page of that guide which details all the stations. I think Whitechapel will probably be my best bet.

@RaspberryBlonde I knew it wasn't right in the same place but didn't realise it was quite a walk away. I hope it is well signposted Grin

Download the CityMapper app. It allows you to plan step free journeys Smile

Hmmm. I am now wondering whether to just get a bus to Stratford and book National Express from there, even though I have to change at Victoria with a 2 hour wait for the next bus!

@Millificent download the tfl go app. Set your preferences to wheelchair accessible. It will plan your route for you.

Mile End is not wheelchair accessible.

Millificent · 21/09/2022 14:42

I am sorted I think - bus to Liverpool Street station, then tube to Victoria. Thanks all Flowers

Hi possible neighbour! Don't go to Mile End, it's possibly the least accessible station ever, three sets of stairs. Whitechapel is fully accessible now since it was done up for the new Elizabeth line. Bus from Mile End to Whitechapel then district line to Victoria.

Thanks @Adultchildofelderlyparents that sounds more doable as I’m not a fan of the huge stations. I’m actually coming more from Victoria Park rather than Mile End, so I’m not sure we’d be neighbours Grin

Ah, small world! I'm not far from Vicky park. So, depending where you are there:

  • If you're nearer the east side of the park it might be easier to get a bus to Stratford and start your journey there. Central line from Stratford, change at Mile End to district line all the way to Victoria. Changing at Mile End is step free if you're travelling the same direction - you get off central line go forward a couple of metres and get on district line, the two platforms are joined. It's only steps to enter the station and to change direction of travel.
  • If you are nearer the west side of the park, I don't think there is a direct bus to Whitechapel so you'd need to travel down to Mile End Road and take a bus there, then district line from Whitechapel to Victoria.
