Just that really.

Because they don't want to? What difference does it make whether you use them or not?

vodkaredbullgirl · 20/09/2022 22:39

🤔

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 20/09/2022 22:41

I do! The Archers threads always have an emoji in them. Regulars have said they find it helpful to spot the thread.

MomwasCasual · 20/09/2022 22:43

Probably just because for ages they didn't work, and if you tried they made it look shit.

Also why I probably still type the old [ g r i n] to get this dude > Grin rather than use any one of the myriad of mirthly emojis now available!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 20/09/2022 22:48

Grin is my favourite emoji of all time.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/09/2022 22:55

The MN emoticons didn't used to work in titles, do they now? Most generic emojis don't have their charm, though sometimes the 🤷‍♀️ seems apt.

00100001 · 21/09/2022 06:38

I do agree that Grin and the greatest of them all

It doesn't.

I was just wondering....

I do if I think it requires one.

RampantIvy · 21/09/2022 06:41

Where can I find the shoulder shrug one? I don't have an iPhone BTW.

Just use the search function on the emoji section of the keyboard

A long time ago we started to be mindful of members who used aids like screen readers. Emojis in thread titles were a particular problem for screen readers so we avoided using them; new members who used emojis in thread titles were asked (not by HQ but informally by users) to not do so as they rendered the site unusable for this group of members. This has largely been adhered to over the intervening years.

Hope this helps.

RampantIvy · 21/09/2022 22:48

🤷‍♀️🤷‍♂️

Thank you @00100001. I didn't know I could do that.

RancidOldHag · 21/09/2022 22:54

Because they can seriously bugger up the display of the pages that show thread titles for those who access the site using certain forms of assistive technology

It's one of the little considerate courtesies of MN that is really appreciated

As is the expectation that people who can write in standard English do so - that's very helpful to the same group (especially the avoidance of txt spk) plus it's helpful to those for whom English is not a first language and for some who live with dyslexia.

Perhaps think of both those things as a form of inclusive action

Yes, but it's at a price for other users, who will have to hide it

And it's unhelpful to start a creep towards making the site less accessible

This is really useful info and it never occurred to me before.
Will be bearing this in mind in future!

FlibbertyGiblets · 22/09/2022 13:20

Pleased to help, very happy to know that the explanation was useful. Have a great afternoon, everyone.

TeenDivided · 22/09/2022 13:22

Because when you use emojis all I see are tiny rectangles?

And because we're adults so can read real words <old git emoji>

ErrolTheDragon · 22/09/2022 15:39

Are emojis and/or MN emoticons in posts problematic too, or is it mainly thread titles where they're best avoided?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 22/09/2022 15:40

It looks messy.

Hi Errol, as far as I know they are not such a problem in posts.

@RancidOldHag thoughts on this from you would be welcome, if that is okay?

I have a VI screen reader user poster (sorry for the awfully terrible clunky language) on the tip of my tongue to ask, groping for their username in my memory.

I agree. Unnecessary.

picklemewalnuts · 22/09/2022 18:00

A PP here explained that MN emoji's in posts are ok, but all the huge variety of others are unreadable to assistive tech, leaving visually impaired readers wondering what everyone else was seeing.

Particularly when it adds tone and character to a post- sarcasm, from the chinny reckon, for example.

I favour the <ponders mortality> fashion of emoting!
