Help me work out my income tax

Is there anyone up who can help me with my income tax?

I started a new job 1st September. I have not worked or had any income for the rest of the tax year up to this point.

My salary is £25,713.96
My tax code is 1131N

I was probably wrongly assuming that because I am only working roughly half of the tax year that the tax I would pay monthly would not be so high.

My payslip says

Gross pay £2142.83
Cat A £145.06
Taxable pay £198.27
Income tax £396.80
Pension £158.56

Net pay £1442.41

Is this right? Will I have to wait until the end of the tax year for a rebate if the tax is higher than I should be paying?

That's not the normal tax code, which is 1257L so you might need to find out about that first. Does your employer have a payroll person/department you could talk to?

JaniceBingALing · 20/09/2022 21:28

The tax code is that one because we took advantage of marriage tax allowance whilst I wasn't working and I transferred part of my allowance to my husband. That makes my taxable income lower (I think £11,130)

I've emailed payroll but had an automated email saying it'll take up to 10 working days to get back to me which is after pay day. There's no one else I can contact.

Employers have no choice but to use the code given, and don't get to see the workings.

Does your code also have an M1 after it?

That would mean a non cumulative code, which would mean Any refund would be made about July next year

JaniceBingALing · 20/09/2022 21:44

No M1 on it, no.

If you do have a non cumulative code - best bet is to give HMRC a call direct, takes about 30 mins on hold but you can explain the situation and they can change your tax code to a cumulative one. What this means - cumulative takes into account your income and allowances for the tax year to date and non cumulative only gives you 1/12th of all tax free allowances because it doesn't look back at the tax year to date. Calling HMRC direct is better, as pp said payroll depts by law have to use whatever code HMRC tell them to.

I had this, had to phone the tax office and they reduced the monthly tax.

Rumblebear · 20/09/2022 21:48

Have just seen that there is no M1. Best bet still to call HMRC. I had to call recently about mine and they changed my PAYE code and I got that back the extra I had paid in next month's pay.

Have you tried going onto your government gateway account? You can put in your salary and it will just your tax accordingly.

JaniceBingALing · 20/09/2022 22:18

Thank you so much, that's incredibly helpful. I will try and call hmrc tomorrow. I tried through the gateway but it didn't work.

This would be a normal tax code for someone who has trfd 10% of their allowance to a spouse.

If your tax code is 1131N, it means that you have transferred £1,257 of your personal allowance to your partner, leaving you with an allowance of £11,313.
