Why is the woman next to me sitting in her car with the engine on?

Just that really.
We've dropped off our kids at dance school and we're just waiting in the car park for the class to end. She's been sat there with her engine running for at least half an hour. I don't get how anyone can waste that much fuel! Does she not realise? I'm not going to tell her but does anyone else.do.that - and why would you?

I do it in our transit. No guarantee it’ll start again otherwise. It’s currently on ramps in the garden after being towed back from dingwall by my brother

rubydoobydoo · 20/09/2022 20:17

I live near a dance school and a lot of the parents wait outside with their engines on and the headlights on full beam dazzling anyone trying to drive up the road - I understand they might want the heating or the radio on but surely there's need for the headlights!

TeddyTrucks · 20/09/2022 20:20

On a public road I'm pretty sure it's actually an offence under the Road Traffic Act.

grafittiartist · 20/09/2022 20:21

It's illegal isn't it?
Noise pollution- anti social

serenghetti2011 · 20/09/2022 20:24

It’s terrible for kids to be coming out of school /dancing/football into atmosphere full of exhaust fumes. There are enough especially in built up areas and it’s been proven to affect kids with asthma. As a parent of asthmatic it annoys me outside schools as really there is no need for it. I make sure my car is warm on drive to school they are only in the car a few minutes so it spent need to be roasting warm for a few minutes. Most cars work radio/charger with the car off. Sad that people can’t sit without a Device for a few minutes really!!

AlsoknownasOther · 20/09/2022 20:24

My car has to be on to charge my phone. Drives me mad.

BettyOBarley · 20/09/2022 20:25

I listened to the radio for a short while without the engine running and it killed my battery stone dead (car is about 8 years old though so needed a new one anyway) but maybe she's worried about that. Although now I just don't listen to the radio while stationery as I agree with you and wouldn't leave my engine running for ages personally.

7Worfs · 20/09/2022 20:25

Antisocial as fuck. I live on a cul de sac next to a school and regularly tell parents parking outside my house to turn their engines off.
One of my neighbours was so ticked off he applied and got approval for double yellow lines for our whole street.
Serves those idling engine fuckers right - now they have to walk to do their pick- ups.

Only on a road

etulosba · 20/09/2022 20:27

I do it to charge my phone when I'm stuck at some tedious shite activity such as dance classes and my battery is about to run out. No way am I sitting twiddling my thumbs with no device for an hour.

There’s more than enough electricity stored in your car’s battery to charge your phone many times over. You don’t need to run the engine to do it.

YelloCar · 20/09/2022 20:29

I like a constant 24C in the car as I almost always wear shorts and T-shirt if not going into the shops.
How about a jumper?

camelfinger · 20/09/2022 20:30

It pisses me off no end, especially outside my school or by school. Clearly fuel is still too cheap. If I see someone charging their phone with the engine on I’ll get ready to film them using it when they drive off so can report it, hopefully they’ll get some points.

MinnyMous · 20/09/2022 20:32

So bad for the environment and her actually. She’s breathing in all the particulates while she is sitting there. Certainly wouldn’t do it with a child in the car. It’s also in the highways code not to leave cars engines running and in some areas you can be fined.

Captinplanit · 20/09/2022 20:32

Honestly can’t believe some of the excuses for anti social and highly polluting behaviour on this thread. What an entitled world we live in.

Mum2jenny · 20/09/2022 20:32

Some really sad ppl commenting tonight….

Next thread.. why is this weirdo in the next car watching me?

Shut up!!
LOL, you made me spill my brandy. 😵

FingersofFish · 20/09/2022 20:33

I see this all the time. People often sit with engines idling on our road because It's quiet and close to the hospital. Taxis too, turn the bloody engine off. So annoying!

KiraKiraHikaru · 20/09/2022 20:35

My car battery died the other day while I was listening to the radio and had the fans on. Not risking that again!

ancientgran · 20/09/2022 20:35

couchparsnip · 20/09/2022 20:05

No baby in the back. It's not that cold either. I'm sat here in a shirt and don't need the heater on.
Charging a phone doesn't need the engine to run -neither does listening to the radio. I'm doing both with my engine off!
FFS now someone else is doing it - and he has his lights on as well. What's the matter with everyone?

In my car you do need the engine on to charge a phone, same in DHs car.

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 20/09/2022 20:35

Leaving an engine idling is an offence under Section 42 of the Road Traffic Act 1988. The Act enforces rule 123 of the Highway Code, which states, “You must not leave a vehicle engine running unnecessarily while the vehicle is stationary on a public road.”23 Sept 2020

If the lady is on a public road, then it's illegal.
If she's in a private car park then there's nothing you can do.

Environmentally , it's very selfish.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 20/09/2022 20:37

Someone at work does this in their lunch hour. It's really annoying

GrowOneStrawberry · 20/09/2022 20:37

My car does NOT charge battery on phone with engine off. Not even just with the ignition on.
Not that i do it for other reasons anyway but not all cars are the same

There are options other than running a car engine to piss about on the socials.

YeOldeTrout · 20/09/2022 20:38

In my area, the car would be running with no one inside it.
I agree that obviously fuel is still very cheap for most people.

No way am I sitting twiddling my thumbs with no device for an hour.

See... I go for a walk, or a run. If I had a whole hour. Only very rarely would the weather be too terrible to go for a walk. Or drive home & do something productive for 30 minutes.

Raul57 · 20/09/2022 20:02

I have my GLS running most of time waiting for my wife shopping as it's either too hot so climate control on and now it's a bit nippy, I like a constant 24C in the car as I almost always wear shorts and T-shirt if not going into the shops.

Jumper?
