New washing machine - do I run am empty cycle first?

Further to my previous thread asking for washing machine recommendations - I have one!

Am keen to bung a load in but wondered if it's necessary to run an empty wash first? Not sure where I picked this up from - and can't remember if I did it with my last machine. So, is it recommended to do this? I have checked the manual that came with it but can't see anything at all about this.

It's a Hoover H3W492DE1-80 (if anyone has one!)

Thanbk you!

I never do. You've removed the transit bolts, yeah? 😉

OldSkoool · 20/09/2022 18:54

Mines not the same make but I just put mine on a quick 15 min cycle the first time.

itsthesoundofthepolice · 20/09/2022 19:08

I have in the passed. Just a quick wash with some detergent im sure I read something about running a wash to make sure there's no oil/residue that will go on clothes.
make sure the transit bolts are out whatever you do

Sorry for typos, I'm overexcited!

@Mabelface - whatever they are, am presuming the guys that brought it plumbed it in dealt with them!

yes run a quick wash first.

when we got ours (not a hoover), the person who plumbed it in tan the first wash before he left.

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 20/09/2022 19:14

It's too big for me to pull out to look so will ring them tomorrow and check that they were removed!

The guy checked it was working, switched it on at the wall and wotnot, but didn't run a wash.

The drum can be moved manually, does that mean they're out? Oh god, can't do a wash tonight now, will have to wait till I've spoken to the guys tomorrow. It's in a tight space and way too heavy for me 🙁

I had a washing machine installed and he ran a quick 15 min wash, mainly to check there was no leaks but if he hadn't I would of done one anyway

User1754983 · 20/09/2022 19:29

If someone fitted it they would have taken the bolts out, was it AO or curry's or someone like that

User1754983 · 20/09/2022 19:36

They would have given you the bolts with the manual as you need them if you need to move it far, they will be heavyish plastic/metal things about 2 or 3 inches long

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 20/09/2022 19:51

@User1754983 - it was a big appliance place, but a more local one. Definitely wasn't given any bolts.

@PunishmentRoundupWithJoon - the manual was in the drum along with other bits an a spare hose for something.

DH usually fits ours but last one John Lewis fitted as he was away, they definitely gave me the bolts, there were three of them maybe other places don't, perhaps someone else might know

Don’t assume that installers have removed all the travel bolts

I had a machine at a friends once where it was installed, they took out the bolts and started a short empty cycle ……
Then when the spin kicked in there was banging and the machine bouncing around.

They had removed the normal number of bolts but it was the larger model with more bolts.

The extra pipe etc will be for different installations, for example you may have it fully installed with an inlet and drain pipe, then there would be an extra pipe to hang over the sink for plumbing without the outlet drain … etc

Tomikka · 20/09/2022 20:16

PS ….. if possible pull it out and check the installation guide for the travel bolts and to ensure they are out

But in my friends case the washing machine was replaced and as they called the manufacturers help line the serial number was tagged on their warranty system in case the shop tried to resell it

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 20/09/2022 20:36

Am so keen to pull it out and check but it's way too heavy for me. Will have to wait till partner here unless, when I call tomorrow, they tell me they've definitely been removed!

Have you put a load in yet @PunishmentRoundupWithJoon ?
My new machine arrive today, I ran it empty and then put a load in and I’ve never seen so many suds! I’m wondering why my old machine didn’t foam up as much (build up maybe?) so was wondering how yours looked. I’m nervously waiting for the end of the cycle to see if this all rinses out or not.

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 21/09/2022 16:00

Yes, @StrikeandRobin - did two loads earlier. Bolts had been removed so all seems fine. Rang the company to ask and was reassured that if their guys had fitted it, the bolts would have been removed.

I didn't notice any suds, though the manual states that "..an overdose of detergents can cause excessive foaming..." Could it be that perhaps?

OP posts:
PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 21/09/2022 16:02

I did notice a warning in the manual against using anything other than liquid detergent, which surprised me, as I've always used powder and thought it was better for the machine.

OP posts:
StrikeandRobin · 21/09/2022 17:59

I only use the bare minimum of powder, less than the soap manufacturers advise tbh, after reading on here you don’t need as much as they say.

I haven’t read the manual yet 😂however, I won’t be changing to liquid though no matter what it says! Shame they didn’t specify they had removed the transit bolts for you, would have saved you wondering and having to phone, they also should have given them to you in case you move, at least you are sorted now.

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 21/09/2022 20:40

@StrikeandRobin - yes, they should've left them, odd that they didn't. Luckily, it's highly unlikely I'll be moving in the next 20 years! Hope you get your sud situation sorted out 🙂
