What do teens have now for info about sex instead of magazines?

I really want to direct my 14yo to useful content about sex & relationships.

I am thinking about the kind of guidance I got from magazines like Bliss, Sugar etc - I feel that, yes they had their faults, but they did present informative, edited content about topics that I didn’t want to ask my parents about or rely on my peers to know about! I worry that teens these days get this sort of information from the internet & it isn’t filtered in any way…

I am aware of Scarleteen website, are there tiktoks/instagrams/YouTube channels that a 14yo could be directed to?

By 14 they'll have seen more porn than you can imagine

TrashPandas · 20/09/2022 10:58

Porn. God help them.

DistrictCommissioner · 20/09/2022 11:10

Hah yes - so what’s the counterpoint to porn?

Too much porn unfortunately.
Which will teach all the wrong things.

I'm dreading my two becoming teens. Lots of conversations will need to had at en early age.

Lots of early conversations about respect and consent. By about the age of 10 you'll sadly need to broach the topic of porn and prepare them that it's misogynistic and doesn't show healthy and "normal" practices. Most of them will be accessing it by 11, either on their own devices or from friends.

Yes, we do & have discussed porn & sex at home. But at the same time, I know she would value a resource that wasn’t her mum! Seems a shame if there is nothing at all out there.

There's good old fashioned books!

ElvenDreamer · 20/09/2022 11:49

I second books. There's loads of cute modern guides along the lines of a teenagers guide to everything, have a search on amazon, tons of stuff comes up.

Ask the school, I bet they know some appropriate websites.

Sausagerollfiend · 20/09/2022 12:03

Has your dd watched Sex Education on Netflix? There's a really good book that accompanies the series and talks about sex in a factual, teenagery way through the use of the characters.

Oh really. She hasn’t watched Sex Education yet but she probably should actually. Will look at the book.

I don’t now but have a same aged teen. Hate to think that she is looking at any porn. Yuck. Must have that chat soon and see what her views are. No way to access anything horribly bad on her phone but I’m sure others are.
I used to love just seventeen at around 14/15 agree i don’t know of anything similar

Pinkpeony2 · 20/09/2022 12:22

Although sex education TV show is an 18 rating so not suitable for my 13 year old!!

CriticalThinkingNeeded · 20/09/2022 12:49

This site is factual for teens/young adults:
www.healthforteens.co.uk/sexual-health/

And, crucially, covers consent/relationships/emotional health etc., too.

Houselamp · 20/09/2022 12:56

Youtube- there are a set of sex and relationships channels.
For the last 15 years maybe thats where all the information is. There are some good ones like Hannah Witton, Sexplanations etc and there are some on Crash Course.

Mostly its so easy to find any information you could want though a google search that nothing is really a mystery now.

There's a YouTube site (subscription and costs) called beducate - they have links to their Instagram etc. which has some good free resources on
Here's the link to Insta (I'm on the app so not sure this will be clicky:
