At what point do you turn on the radiotors?

How cold does it have to be? How many layers of clothing do you wear before turning it on? I read somewhere people wait till the temp is around 15 before turning it on.

Thermal underwear, tracksuit trousers, t-shirt, woolen jumper or fleece, fleece gilet, socks and slippers, scarf. I don't look at the temperature and our thermostat has no numbers on it so can't set it to come on at a particular temp Confused

LunasMom2 · 20/09/2022 10:15

Today. It was 18.2 when i Got up. Have Big socks and sweater on. I want atleast 20 degrees ! Now sitting under a blanket, waiting for heating 😂

LionessesRules · 20/09/2022 10:18

Nor for a while yet. Wen it's too cold to be wearing socks and jumpers and be comfortable.

Ours hasn't dropped below 19 yet, although I was chilly yesterday morning, I think that's more the temperature has dropped quite fast rather than it actually being cold.

But DH has to sit inside the house all day. I think he will heat the room he works in before we put the central heating on. DS2 was wearing shorts, no teeshirt, for most of yesterday!

HorribleHerstory · 20/09/2022 10:26

It comes on when it is below 5 degrees to protect the pipes. Ever since I had a massive frozen pipe related burst pipe that wrecked half the house, when my children were young. That happened because we didn’t have functional heating or hot water in the house at all to warm the pipes up but it was a disaster.

It's generally been around 16c for a few days before we give in and put it on, usually early October. We'll do our best to string it out a bit longer though due to the cost of living.

House was 18.3c when I got up, and it's crept up to 19.3c which I'm not complaining about.

stormelf · 20/09/2022 10:46

Pre children we never turned it on before mid December, now we have children it goes on around dd's birthday in October if cold enough

Bellysmackers · 20/09/2022 10:49

When it drops below 16 I've caved and put it on for an hour. I think around 16-18 is pretty manageable though if you wear warm clothing. Below 16 and I'm 🥶

TwittleBee · 20/09/2022 10:54

Growing up, at Dad's house it was 17c. But recently in our own home I've struggled when it falls below 19. This year I'm determined to get us back to 17c as we did when growing up.

FourTeaFallOut · 20/09/2022 10:56

Whenever it drops below 19.5c. I have crappy lungs and I'm getting over pneumonia. I have the money and have no intention of playing martyr.

PinkHeadphones · 20/09/2022 10:59

When it is about 17 degrees. It's 19.5 at the moment, which is fine.

Ilovetocrochet · 20/09/2022 10:59

Normally mine would be on today as the thermostat is showing that it’s 17 degrees and I felt cold even lying in bed! I actually had a walk around the house to see if I had left a window open!

But this year I’m going to try to keep it off until October when my fixed term energy deal ends as I was to keep usage as low as possible before they change my direct debits! I currently pay £105 a month dual dual and have a lot of credit but am dreading the new payments.

So, I’ll see how I cope with an extra layer and my heated poncho but as I have restricted mobility, I cannot move around easily so it’s hard to keep warm. I just need to be mindful that I had damp problems a few years ago when my old boiler wasn’t able to heat the house adequately and I want to avoid the same problems by not heating the house enough.

I didn't mean that to be a riposte to FourTeaFallOut, that post hadn't appeared when I wrote mine so it's a coincidence we mentioned the same temp - I mean 19.5 is fine for me, but of course we all have different temperatures we are comfortable at.

FinallyHere · 20/09/2022 11:08

DH has reduced circulation and reduced mobility. Our thermostats in the rooms where he spends time are set a lot higher than is comfortable for me.

And yes, the heating has been on a few times already this year.

Getting old is no fun.

Bestcatmum · 20/09/2022 11:12

Mine isn't going on, I'm loaded up with thermals and the cats have thermal heating pads.
Its no different to the farm I grew up on.
I can afford heating but I am saving to do my house up and I don't want to spend a ton of extra money on heating.

😁 No worries, I didn't assume you were responding to me.

abovedecknotbelow · 20/09/2022 11:15

I don't have a thermostat linked to the heating, I turn the heating on when it's cold enough. I'm in SE London, dds bedroom was still 20 last night, def don't need the heating on yet but it was fresh this morning probably won't be long.

MissyCooperismyShero · 20/09/2022 11:45

Ours is on all year - obviously it's thermostat controlled so never comes on in summer. It's turned itself on 3 times in the last week now. For 15 mins each time as temperature had dropped. Its set for different temps at different times and it suits us very well.

StarlingsInTheRoof · 20/09/2022 12:38

I only put the summer duvet on instead of a sheet last week. Have used a lightweight jumper a few times. Will put on heating when it gets cold, not gone below 18 degrees inside yet.
