How to set apart a 'First 100 days in new job' presentation?

I need to give a 10 minute interview presentation on what I would do in my first 100 days in a new job. There are lots of helpful templates and ideas online, but they are all very generic. Does anyone have any ideas on how to make mine stand out from the crowd (in a good way)?

I know it's trite to say it but I'd really focus on what you have to say rather than worrying about format or visuals, yes a really great diagram or well chosen picture can help illustrate and get your point across but you'll only know what that is once you know the point in the first place if you see what I mean. Some of the best interview presentations I've seen have been in an almost totally plain format, just words on a page really, maybe with the odd very simple graph or flow diagram or similar, but the content has been absolutely on the money in terms of knowledge of the company/business, industry plus creative or innovative ideas that really make you want to hire that person. I know from personal experience sadly that you can spend hours messing around choosing a font and a beautiful template and colour scheme etc but really that's a diversion/stalling tactic from actually getting on and writing the thing.

That being said I do like a nice clear layout, no more than 3 substantive points per slide, not too many words, judicious use of some smart art (to illustrate a point not just for the sake of it) or data/charts/graphs and personally I enjoy a little cartoon, picture, joke or popular culture reference to enliven a bit of a dull topic although again do make sure it adds something or demonstrates something and isn't just in there for the sake of it...

10 minute presentation?

Get through it in 5, then hand out biscuits.

Be prepared for them to ask you to cut it to 5 mins immediately before starting, tests your ability to adapt.

I presented a 90 day plan recently. It was for marketing though so I don’t know what help it would be. Happy to help if you have any questions, though!

wellerwoman · 21/09/2022 10:45

Thanks all - appreciate your help and will bear the above points in mind - I'm pretty good at minimal powerpoint, just clueless about what I would do in-role 😅maxelly (just wish we could chat over biscuits instead nightmare Grin). This is for a marketing role, too gorgeous.
vanity I would love it if they did that!

@wellerwoman more than happy to share mine with you. Not sure of what level you’re applying for but this is for head of marketing. More than happy to share!

Maybe if you are asking this question your not suitable for the roll and copying someone else’s work would be disingenuous on your new employer.

I come from a sales and marketing background and I have more questions for them then they have for me when interviewed.

surely this is basic skills of marketing.

What is the product, who is the target customer, what are the sales targets and growth opportunities. What type of marketing do they use now etc etc

the first thing I would do in any new role is analyse the effectiveness of what is done now and research the market and then I can tell them what they should and shouldn’t be doing.

First 100 days would be getting to know the team, upwards and downwards, understanding the processes, staff gripes etc.
you can't do much in 100 days.

GorgeousLadyofWrestling · 22/09/2022 21:47

I don’t think it’s about copying someone else’s work and that that means you’re not suitable for the job.

I’m sure OP could have worked out what she actually needed to do in those 100 days but so could anybody if they sat down and thought about it. It’s about sharing ideas, what worked well in specific ways for them, considering new ways of doing things. And sometimes it’s just starting with a structure that you can them pull apart and shape to your own needs.

I come from a work culture that positively encourages me to go and speak to other marketers about what they’re doing and how they do it. I speak to CMOs frequently, asking for advice and talking through ideas. I’ve started a new role myself and just this week I’ve talked to two different HoMs one who sent me the OKR metrics she uses, and the other who sent me the revenue forecasting modelling he uses. I’m part of a massive Revenue function private community on slack where it’s whole purpose is marketers and sales leaders discussing their work and sharing their work to help others. That’s literally all it’s for. So I guess it’s really odd to me to hear someone asking for ideas or support means they’re not capable of doing the job they’re interviewing for.
