What happened on the Elizabeth Line?

Paddington station out of action all day due to "extensive damage" to overhead lines. What kind of damage? There were no storms. And that route they're talking about, it's the Elizabeth Line, isn't it? What happened?

I’d assume it’s theft - overhead cables here often have copper theft.

threegoodthings · 19/09/2022 19:43

It must be something to do with Paddington Bear. He's feeling angry at how he's been exploited recently and decided to show his wrath on the day of the funeral.

BruceHellerAlmighty · 19/09/2022 19:44

Must be busy thieves to steal so very much the night before a state funeral on a line named after the Queen.

Sometimes one of the trains causes problems. Lots of things can cause overhead damage - not just storms.

BruceHellerAlmighty · 19/09/2022 19:48

I guess.

It doesn't say that in the article though. Or in any other reporting about it. Usually it says what's caused damage doesn't it, and what they're doing to fix it.

There's always sth going on that involve train cancellations on this line!
They can't be relied on at all
'Damage to electrical overhead cables' so they are, I read, able to run a couple of diesel trains - no idea how it all works!

Theimpossiblegirl · 19/09/2022 19:49

It's between Paddington and Reading.

BruceHellerAlmighty · 19/09/2022 19:49

Do they often close Paddington Station for the full day, when they have these problems?

OP posts:

And trains are still affected! More than 12 hours later
DD uses the Elizabeth line to go to school and the amount of times something has happened to delay the trains!

What happened on the Elizabeth Line?
BruceHellerAlmighty · 19/09/2022 19:57

Lol, they put out a story just last week that it's the most punctual service in the country. Apparently not then ha. Or, maybe it is, because everything else is even worse!

I live on that line and this happens relatively often. It’s not just the Elizabeth line that’s affected but GWR services as well. They don’t usually close Paddington.

BruceHellerAlmighty · 19/09/2022 20:01

The gwr is a separate incident, I think. Some poor soul got hit by a train. But there's also damage to overhead lines on what sounds like the Elizabeth Line - Reading through to Heathrow affected - that's the line that covers that whole stretch isn't it? Although not fully integrated yet.

GWR commuter services run on the same track as TfL. Reading and Heathrow are on separate branches which separate after Hayes & Harlington so the damage is probably between there and Paddington.

Leftbutcameback · 19/09/2022 20:18

There was about 2km of damage to overhead lines near Southall / Hayes and Harlington. Likelihood is that there was some damage and then the pantograph of an early train did the rest. It's the earlier type of overhead line so lest robust than the stuff out further west. It's terrible bad luck for something this serious to happen today. I think NR will be aiming to fix it for tomorrow.

Leftbutcameback · 19/09/2022 20:19

Six trains were stuck and needed to be evacuated - some very close to paddington, so they must have shut off a large section of power. I feel sorry for all involved.

Leftbutcameback · 19/09/2022 20:26

And the issue with running diesels (some of the trains have that ability) is if the infrastructure is damaged you need to be sure there are no wires dangling or towers damaged. Dewiring is a serious problem. The infrastructure involved is complex and very heavy duty, and strung under tension (it's the same issue with replacing central reservation crash barriers)

I don't know but what a day for it to happen, all these poor people totally stuck trying to get home.

On one hand uk looks amazing and then this.
