Maybe, maybe not...

Uniform threw me as well but looking at wiki (I know) Lord Stevens does hold honorary Air Commodore rank with No.3 No 3 (Royal Auxiliary) Air Force Police Squadron .. No idea what their dress uniform looks like but the rank certainly ties in (Air Commodore= Commodore in Naval terms).

Hard to see the medal ribbons on the screen snap shot but they aren't a bad match with those listed for Lord Stevens....

Will we ever know for certain??

I still wonder but DB says the dad man is wearing naval uniform not airforce...

While we're here, can anyone tell me what the heralds and pursuivants do on the daily? Like, are they civil servants that have to get togged up on special days or do they do in on a Monday do do some heralding?

They mostly do private genealogical work but get a small annual payment from the Queen/King. The Garter King of Arms seems to get paid extra to advise the government on heraldry. The Earl Marshal who was walking with them is usually busy being the Duke of Norfolk. It is a hereditary role in his family which I always find ironic because he is in charge of ceremonies for the head of the Church of England but his family are famously Catholic (one of his ancestors is a Catholic martyr).

Google turned up this blog which seems to summarise the heralds: kclaidenyardley.com/2021/04/16/college-of-arms-and-funerals/

Thanks for those who tried to answer my pallbearer query.

I should have been clearer, I meant the one who was at the front (so not technically a pallbearer).

This is the chap.

He's been all over the bbc for a few days talking about how 4 generations of his family have served, or was jt his family have served thus at 4 Royal funerals.

Any way, his family = v posh + that guards unit + number 4

Ok, on this video I think it's him that appears at 1hr 40 min 40 seconds.

He's in amongst the foreign dignitaries at the door but makes bee line for what from previous views looks like ushers/ other personnel tucked off to the LHS of the entry and appears to get into conversation with at least one of those....

It's certainly a naval style uniform but what's the small insignia above the Commodore rank rings? Submariner badge or aviators wings (as per the Fleet air arm)...If it's the later (and Lord stevens is a qualified commercial pilot) that might or might not take us back to the Honorary rank in the Royal Auxiliary Air Force Police.

Any further thoughts?

notimagain · 19/09/2022 21:34

Doooooo.....Sorry..here's the link..

notimagain · 19/09/2022 21:38

Bangs head on wall...no idea why that happened

Video is youtube, if you search for it It's the BBCs "Funeral of Queen Elizabeth II", full running time is 9hrs 09 min 38, I'll C&P the link again anyway..

Yes that's him!
I'm going to assume its Lord Stevens then based on what you're saying and tenbob confirming it too.
I shall sleep easier tonight for having the mystery solved!

He's from my town, his name is Dean Jones

It's not Lord Stevens, although I don't know who it is.
He is wearing a Royal Navy Commodore uniform. When you see him walking through the Abbey doors on the live feed his is amongst the heads of state but he's not actually arriving then. If you look, he has been outside and is returning, he walks to the area at the side of the door where there are other armed forces. Senior armed forces personnel were working at the Abbey, managing the logistics and delivery of the service. So he's not a celebrity or a guest (or your dad 😊) he's there doing a job.

Ah ok, thanks. The video clip my brother sent didn't have him leaving just arriving. Makes sense though. My dad was in the navy so still could have been him in a parallel world 😬
