Are all University halls so mulitcultural?

I moved DS in yesterday. A Redbrick University.

He's had a horrible time over the last couple of years, but got it together to get a place and seems genuinely excited by the study.

I've been excited for him as it's a fresh start and an opportunity to meet people far outside our usual circles (which would be mostly white, skilled working class/lower middle class).

The families moving DC in yesterday were indeed hugely varied, which is fantastic. DS was out last night with flatmates from 5 different ethnicities and 4 different countries. I am a little surprised though to find that the white English middle class don't dominate.

Not bad surprised, just having my preconceptions put aside and wonder if this is typical?

oh good lord the woke stasi and their extraordinary ability to fail to understand not even really that complex comments continue on.…

Rule #1 of Mumsnet: DO NOT MENTION RACE! Ever! Just ignore it.

I mean you did say you were surprised, and you seem surprised enough to have made a thread on it so

I mean no I didn't. I said I expected to find diversity, I also expected to find the white middle class. So actually, his halls seem less diverse than I expected. That's what surprised me.

Sorry about the grief you're getting on this thread, OP. I love your excitement and positive attitude. All the best for your son's new adventure. My DS (off to Uni soon) is also shy. I don't believe you've said a single unreasonable thing.

DC went to a rural secondary school: 99% white! College (in the little bad city with near-zero crime rate that rural parents fret about letting their 15 year olds go to alone) was at least 15% ethnic minority pupil composition. And DD's Uni has been more like 50% non-white. One of the courses she considered was more like 95% Asian at Open Day, in a highly Asian part of London & I suspect attracted high % of very local community. Actual income of current Uni-parents still seems high, DD has fallen in with rich friends. I pay for her plane fare and the other parents fully fund holiday homes and posh adventures in France for DD & group of her mates. I suspect that there is a strong trend that the truly working class white kids tend to stay local. 2 of my colleagues (Academic staff with PhDs) are local white guys from WC background; they would have been more reluctant to attend Uni far from their families.

I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to stay close to family when attending Uni. For Asian kids in East London or white lads in rural places.

TBH it was the white middle class dominating that worried me most for him, so at least he has a "safe" flat. And from this thread it seems I was right to be worried about those people and their attitudes towards him/us.

Who are "those" people?

Teenyliving · 20/09/2022 08:41

@RedWingBoots she means white middle class people - the type patronizing morons who have popped upo on this thread - who are just so progressive that they “can’t see race” - which is itself the ultimate in racism…
