Wine, 40s, hangovers

I had half a bottle of wine over four hours yesterday and I feel so so awful today. I love wine but I'm starting to feel like even a glass isn't worth it as I seem to be so badly affected the next day. I'm in my 40s and wondering if there might be something hormonal involved. However, I often feel headachey and exhausted even when I don't drink. Did anybody else give up in their 40s for this reason and do you feel better for it? Or do you still feel crap?

I read something on here the other day about exactly this - the explanation was that as you get older, your liver is less efficient at filtering alcohol out of your bloodstream so it circulates longer - this means that the effects of the alcohol keep happening for longer - more dehydration, more cortisol is released, your sleep is more disturbed, you don't recover as fast, etc.

I am 40 next year and definitely noticing a hangover from much smaller amounts of alcohol than I used to be able to consume with no reaction at all.

Awrite · 19/09/2022 14:20

Yup, I'm mid forties and rarely drink. It's just not worth the crap sleep and feeling like shit the next day.

I now only drink at social events. Actually, sometimes I pretend I'm on anti-bios so I don't have to drink.

Allschoolsareartschools · 19/09/2022 14:35

Oh dear I think it gets worse, I'm in my 50s & felt absolutely exhausted & mildly hungover all day yesterday. I'd had 2 glasses of wine watching TV the night before.
A wild night it was not!

Yes, I'm mid 40s and have found the enjoyment of wine is outweighed by how rubbish I feel. I still enjoy a glass of wine if I go out for a meal or have friends over but rarely have more than 2 glasses now.

gingertoast · 19/09/2022 14:40

This is me too. Other than sobriety what's the solution? Is it just wine or do spirits have same effect (I don't usually drink spirits so haven't tried this option)

NannyGythaOgg · 19/09/2022 14:43

I got like that in my 40s before I was diagnosed as hypothyroid. Once all that was sorted out, I rarely get hangovers unless I have over a bottle of wine and even then it's mild. Mid 60s now.

StarlightLady · 19/09/2022 14:45

40s and no probs with wine here. So far that is. I don't think I like this getting older thing generally, although I long for my body hair to fall out.

InsertSomethingMotivationalHere · 19/09/2022 14:49

I was a problem drinker on my twenties and early thirties - a bottle of wine at least, every night without fail. Finally I decided it couldn't go in so reduced to Fri/sat night only. Literally within the space of a month my body's tolerance to booze reduced. A couple of glasses of wine and I'm done. Once recently I overdid it and the hangover the next day beyond appalling. I've reduced my drinking by about 90% now from what it was and feel a million times better for it. Those hangovers just aren't worth it!!

hassletassle · 19/09/2022 15:08

37 here and I stopped drinking a few months ago as I just can't any more. One or two glasses of wine keep me awake half the night, and I feel shite/exhausted for a couple of days afterwards.
Combined with having a 3 and 4 year old , stressful job, there is just zero let up to recuperate.

Alcohol free g+t is a nice treat. Alcohol free wine isn't great and I don't like beer or cider.

It's just not with it any more. Within the last couple of months I've had a glass of wine twice and regretted each time. No more !

HurleyBurley · 19/09/2022 17:57

Thanks all, I definitely think it's age. Shame, I adore wine! But the me of the next day is not so keen

Wine is horrific for hangovers, once I hit my 40s I felt like I was suffering a cross between meningitis and a nuclear bomb plus vomiting. I think this might be why the Ancient Roman Emperors were such absolute bastards, they must have woke up feeling like a pound of mince in a dirty sock every day.

StarlightLady · 19/09/2022 18:28

@Namechange768rbhf6 - I thought in the Roman Empire they wore sandals. Are you suggesting the Roman Emperors worse socks and sandals 😂? That's the last time I consider anything from Rome fashionable!

GaslitlikeaVictorianparlour · 19/09/2022 19:23

The mince would have fallen out of a sandal, StarlightLady 😆

StarlightLady · 19/09/2022 20:13

@GaslitlikeaVictorianparlour 🤣

ShirleyPhallus · 19/09/2022 20:14

Y’all need biodynamic organic wine, no hangover to be seen at all!

Mrsjayy · 19/09/2022 20:16

That sounds fancy @ShirleyPhallus bet it isn't £7.99 like my yellow tail

You’re right, but the yellow tail will have all sorts of preservatives in it which make you feel crap

I always think the day of a hideous hangover I’d happily pay £100 to get it taken away so spending an extra tenner on a bottle to stop me feeling rubbish in the first place is ok with me!

Mrsjayy · 19/09/2022 20:26

I just should stop being greedy! .

Beat me to it …

Mrsjayy · 19/09/2022 20:30

I will look out for sulphite free wine see how it goes.

Houseplantmad · 19/09/2022 20:36

South African wine gives me dreadful headaches, even just a glass or two. I think it’s the preservatives/sulphites.
