How about this ?

Especially those big businesses who can afford it.

What’s the reasoning behind this?

anotherbrewplease · 19/09/2022 06:26

Put their money where their mouth is

You are bloody joking, right?
Businesses pay TAXES which HM had to be dragged kicking and screaming into doing.

Whadda · 19/09/2022 06:27

Why?

You seem to think there isn’t enough money to go round. There is, it just doesn’t go round enough.

Small businesses are on their knees, have to absorb the cost of yet another bank holiday, and now you think they shouldn’t have profits?

That doesn’t even make sense.

What are all UK business saying that means giving money to charity is ‘putting their money where their mouth is’?

But they are shut for the day so losing a day's profit and so yeah, putting the money where their mouth is.

ClocksGoingBackwards · 19/09/2022 06:40

Why?

Do have specific companies in mind that have been saying something that means you think they now need to put their money where their mouth is, or do you just think every company should give away their profit for the sake of it?

TheWestIsTheBest · 19/09/2022 06:44

This is one of the maddest things I have seen yet! Which is saying a lot after the last week!

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 19/09/2022 06:45

This is a fucking stupid idea. Honestly 🤦🏻‍♀️

DeadDonkey · 19/09/2022 06:46

What do you mean? All their profits? for how long?

Not sure you have though this out…

PinkButtercups · 19/09/2022 06:47

Yeah, no.

wincarwoo · 19/09/2022 06:47

anotherbrewplease · 19/09/2022 06:26

Put their money where their mouth is

What have they been saying?

Shitfather · 19/09/2022 06:48

Lol.

ZombeaArthur · 19/09/2022 06:51

Who gets to decide which businesses can ‘afford it’?

Snoken · 19/09/2022 06:53

Huh? Why should they? Big businesses aren’t the royal family’s arch enemy, they didn’t cause the death, they are keeping a roof over millions of peoples heads already.

Saucery · 19/09/2022 06:58

I wouldn’t expect them to close for the day and give a day’s profits, but yes, it would have been better if large businesses that have made a huge show of posters with her face on etc at their doors had stayed open and donated profits today.
But it’s all about being seen to Care these days, not actually doing something of practical use.

Inkanta · 19/09/2022 07:00

No I don''t thunk so.

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 19/09/2022 07:01

Maybe as a mark of respect the royals can pay inheritance tax like everybody else.

PotatoHammock · 19/09/2022 07:05

Businesses are perfectly welcome to open if they wish. Several small businesses in my town have said that they will be open as they can't afford not to (and they've been begging people to come in as normal). But most businesses are shut because most people want the opportunity to watch the funeral.

anotherbrewplease · 19/09/2022 07:15

Yep - that is what I'm getting at. Not very articulate in my 'stupid idea' version.

I was thinking that a lot of companies pay lip service to any populist topic/event that comes along but that basically it is meaningless.

Unless you're Yvon Chouinard - he really did put his money where his mouth is. And yes - that does make sense.

What doesn't make sense - to a lot of people - is spending in excess of £8 million on a funeral.

@Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas Yes - that would be good also. But the very wealthy do enjoy their protected status.

Where I work, there won't be much in the way of profits, as I doubt we'll have many customers. We close for two hours, staff are being paid for those two hours (so paid full 7.5/8 hours) and given time off in lieu. There's drinks and snacks for staff who stay on premises to watch what they can of ceremony. All costs money, but we have to open as an element of our business relates to health care.

Popaholic · 19/09/2022 07:29

Well, instead of a huge cardboard cut out of the Queen in my Tesco next to a heaving display of overpriced flowers (hint hint, don’t forget to waste your grocery budget on flowers for the Queen, the markup is 200% so it’s great for our business…), they could have put that £200 from the marketing budget into the local Food Bank. I wonder if they had all those cardboard cut-outs in stock or if it was a rush job to print them…

So I know what you mean OP but I think your idea is silly.

Hearthnhome · 19/09/2022 07:29

No it still doesn’t make sense.

Business that are opening are not doing anything ‘to be seen to care’ .

Bagzzz · 19/09/2022 07:33

Most large businesses have closed as a mark of respect and to allow staff to watch the funeral. Some would have had trade and profit if they had opened short hours instead. (I doubt it would have balanced if open during the funeral.)
