Eating in the hotel restaurant

Do you? Don’t mean in all inclusive or breakfast I always feel it’s cheating a bit somehow not to go and find somewhere else to eat.

but when I do it’s actually usually just as nice and you can crawl straight up to bed…

Completely depends on why I'm there, who with, what's nearby etc. No hard and fast rule.

Mindymomo · 18/09/2022 08:23

We love a cooked breakfast in a hotel, my DH is an early riser so we’re usually first in to be served. Not so keen when you have to pay extra though. I don’t mind a buffet, but prefer to be served.

abovedecknotbelow · 18/09/2022 08:26

Depends on the hotel and the restaurant

thirstyformore · 18/09/2022 08:28

Breakfast? Yes, usually do eat there as easier. Dinner, very rarely, like to explore!

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 18/09/2022 08:28

I did when I stayed in Brighton this year .
I ate dinner and breakfast in the hotel
Lunch I ate out
It was nice to just pop back upstairs when we'd had enough

felulageller · 18/09/2022 08:33

Depends on the menu or if there's anywhere in walking distance. Don't see the point in driving somewhere if can be in house.

bodie1890 · 18/09/2022 08:35

It depends entirely on the restaurant. I would look up reviews, the type of food they serve etc and decide based on that, just like anywhere else. Most hotel restaurants are not as good as what you can find in the surrounding area but there are definitely exceptions.

TigerRag · 18/09/2022 08:39

I rarely have breakfast in the hotel. As for dinner, it depends. I've sometimes gone there if there's no I really fancy elsewhere or it's too dark to consider exploring.

FunsizedandFabulous · 18/09/2022 09:32

Tend to go B&B only. I like finding a new place to eat each evening.

reluctantbrit · 18/09/2022 09:51

Breakfast yes as I can't be bothered finding nice cafes and I prefer eating prior to 10am. Coffee shop chains are boring and for emergencies only.

Dinner - normally a hotel restaurant is more expensive so we do it if we arrive late (flying to somewhere and just driving to the hotel) or the weather is absolute awful.

Most hotels are happy to recommend other restaurants in the area unless they are really out of the way .

Cynderella · 18/09/2022 10:04

I don't do many hotel stays now, but when I do, I plan dinner - look up the menus online and have some idea about where we will eat even if I change my mind when I get there. Because hotel stays are a treat, I want dinner to be good - also, we don't eat meat, and that often means a limited choice.

Last time, I was on a course, I chose a hotel based on its proximity to venue AND menu and reviews of its restaurant. Then, the organisers decided that they would make a block booking at the venue instead of paying a subsistence allowance, so we cancelled our own booking. The hotel dinner was fine - not what I'd have chosen, but nice enough. Plenty of other restaurants on same street, but as PP said, it's nice to have a bottle of wine and just stroll to the lift rather than have to travel back to a hotel.

Sparklingbrook · 18/09/2022 10:11

I prefer to not eat at the hotel, if I'm staying somewhere I prefer to go and see what's on offer locally.
Hotel breakfasts are ok, but you have to get up, dressed face on etc for a certain time along with the rest of the hotel and they can be expensive for what they are.

MindYourBeeswax · 18/09/2022 11:27

If I'm staying on my own, I always have supper in the hotel. It just feels safer but if I'm with my husband or friends, then prefer to try somewhere else for at least one of the evenings.

I’m wondering if it’s an age thing? But ate in premier inn at dinner the other week. We were tired, it was late, and it was a bit of relief…

"cheating"??

cultkid · 18/09/2022 17:37

If I am in a city I never eat dinner at the hotel because I loooove going for dim sum or tapas

If I'm in the countryside and it's not mega expensive then I enjoy eating and a bit of a booze up in the hotel restaurant ... so long as it isn't mega mega expensive otherwise I don't

Breakfast I always have at the hotel if it is a nice hotel and now we have three kids for convenience, too, but when it was just the two of us we enjoyed having breakfast out

It's that first coffee in the morning that really upsets me if I don't have one when I stay in a premier inn type of set up

What I do seriously enjoy is afternoon tea at the hotel I'm staying at (as long as it is a nice hotel!)

We stayed in that kind of instagram hotel in Chester last year with the kids whilst I was pregnant but their restaurant was about £75 a head without drinks and I wouldn't have been able to enjoy the cocktails so we didn't have dinner there,

I am that annoying bastard who eats a Thai take out in their hotel room as I bloody love Thai

I always wish there was a Thai at all the hotels I stay in!!

Luredbyapomegranate · 18/09/2022 17:39

If I am travelling for work and it’s late, sometimes. But your average business 4 star restaurant is usually a bit rubbish and a bit soulless, so I try not to.
