Tiler adding extra onto final bill

Halfway through the job that had been discussed beforehand, tiler says "how far out am I coming with these tiles?" I said I wanted it tiling into the doorway, up to the next room's flooring.

He said the other room hadn't been finished in the right place so he couldn't go that far, and I should get a piece of wood to fill the gap. I said that would look daft and could he finish at the edge of the room please, with a trim to meet the two.

Completed as requested, bill sent at the end of the job with £56 added for "doorway tiling and trim". I provided the tiles, he provided the rest. Door is a standard doorway.

Am I an idiot for not pointing out I wanted the doorway tiling when he measured the room, or is he being unreasonable by asking for extra money for laying (not even) a couple of extra tiles? I would have thought this counted as the room!

It does, that is ridiculous. Do you have a written quote with a description of the job?

daffodilandtulip · 17/09/2022 16:01

Yes but it just details the size of the room and that I'm providing tiles, they are providing materials. So I can forgive that I may have overlooked a tenner maybe for a trim, but I don't see how I should be paying extra for that tiny bit of tiling.

I got a quote for tiling (we bought the tiles ourselves) and our tiler said the trim would be extra.

Fair enough, I would agree I maybe missed that. But to not even want to take the tiles right up to the next room without extra charge?

Were the extra tiles whole tiles or did they need trimming, how many extra tiles and how much trim was used. Presumably he had to make an additional trip to buy the trim, so he’s probably charging for time spent on that. Was a border used, not trim.

daffodilandtulip · 17/09/2022 16:45

They were large tiles so he would have been cutting them anyway, he just had to cut them larger. He got the trim/border out of his van.

Perhaps a picture would help? It sounds like he thought he was only tiling up to the doorway, but you on the spot told him to also tile the threshold- the space in the doorway as well and so he’s within his rights to charge extra for that plus the trim. But depending on how big that is, the £56 could be ok or a piss take.

Roselilly36 · 17/09/2022 16:58

£56 extra is nothing, if you wanted further tiling, and the trims weren’t included, personally I would just pay it. He might have just the trim out of his van, but assuming he didn’t nick them, they cost him money 😂

70cm x 10cm. Literally the threshold.

I agree I probably overlooked the trim (although you'd think he would have asked if I wanted it when he measured up) but £56?

What is £56 as a percentage of the total ?

I would pay up but probably not use them again and not recommend to others.
