Going to a party later & tried on new earrings but they itch like mad! Can I coat them with something? It’s going to drive me crazy…

You can try painting them with clear nail varnish - used to be common in the 90s!

Otherwise if they are dangly, can you swap the ear wires out for a different metal?

EverydayMusing · 17/09/2022 08:33

Oohh thanks. Will see if I can get some.
No, they are attached! Arghh my ears hurt already at the thought!

Tbh if it's that bad, I'd not wear them - sounds painful!

Maybe try coloured varnish if that's all you have to hand - it was more about it being visible!

Itchy more than painful. I’m really desperate to wear them - they make the outfit! Will try. There time until tonight!

That feeling is horrible! I've accepted I need sterling silver posts at a minimum. You have my sympathies.

I have this problem. Your lobes itch and if you leave the earrings in you get actual burns. It's an allergy. Mine is to the nickel in the metal. A friend's daughter can't wear silver.

I avoid the metal.that causes the issue, but if I see some cheap earrings or an unsure what's in them I paint the area in contact with my ears with nail varnish. Posts must be stainless steel.

If I've not had earrings in my ears for a while, they do this. The only metal I don't react with is gold so if I know I want to wear earrings, I put my gold sleepers in for a couple of hours. Then after that I can wear anything.
If I go straight for any other earrings they itch almost immediately, go red, and if I persevere, are weeping by the end of the night.
It's like the sleepers open up the holes again.

I can only wear gold unfortunately.

I have this issue. Can't wear any earrings at all in my two lobe piercings but other piercings never had any problems (belly button, nose etc when younger). I've tried all different metals and then moved to plastic earrings. Eventually the plastic ones also caused pain and itchiness so that's it, no more earrings. It's quite frustrating as my hair is almost always tied up so I liked having small earrings in as you could see them all the time and it seems a really different look without them.

I hope you can find a solution. Could an antihistamine be an idea if it's just for an evening?

I have the same problem and now buy earrings from Solace Jewellery. I think it’s made from medical grade stainless steel and I never have any itchiness with their earrings.

Thanks everyone! Sorry that others suffer, too. These are old my mother’s old ones - vintage - I think maybe originally they were gold plated but it’s worn off over the years. Have our clear varnish on them. Wish me luck.

Me too, I find only silver or gold earrings that don't have this issue.

TrendTonic · 07/03/2023 17:38

Try stainless steel, niobium or titanium. It's probably a nickel reaction which is sore and itchy! Solace jewellery do plain studs and Trend Tonic (me!) Do funky earrings all hypoallergenic

That would explain it - almost certainly the nickel. It's been banned for use in jewellery in the UK and EU now for many years but does pop up still in vintage jewellery and in cheap jewellery made outside the EU. Jewellery from reputable UK sellers will be nickel free but you take your chances on Etsy and the like.

Clear varnish should help but it might be worth getting the posts/hooks replaced if you want to wear them often.
