Do you have a finance on your car?

Only bought our car back in Feb & starting to get issues. Thinking of buying something newer but would need a loan.

I see loads of new expensive cars in the road & wondered how everyone affords them.

Do you have a car on finance & if so how much are your payments?

Have always saved up and paid cash, whether it be a new car or secondhand.
Depends on personal circumstances I know but if you can avoid borrowing to make your initial purchase then instead of repayments you can start saving straight away for its replacement.

The only time this didn't happen was when we were offered 0% so we kept the money in the bank and took their offer.

No we pay cash for a 2-4 year old car and keep it forever - well till something major comes up, or it just reaches that plateau of no real value for about 5 years when you know something expensive might need doing.
DH does all the maintenance. Last car was 3 years old and cost about 16k, and it's now 13 years old and over 100k more on the clock. We drive conservatively, so there is little wear and tear, always goes straight through MOT no advisories. I would expect we'd get about 5k back on it if we sold it with 12m MOT as they've gone up in value so much.

No, we can afford the cars we have

I honestly dont get why people waste so much money on cars.

We walked into a dealership 10 yrs ago, saw the car we liked (new) and paid £10k for it cash. 10 years and 60,000mls later its got another 10yrs at least in it. Other than a few services and maintenance it hasnt cost a penny more. At present it works out as £100 per month and even by the time it is 20yrs old thats £50 a month approx. I can just about live with that cost.

Its a metal box to move us from A to B. Its so sad that we put so much onus on its importance in life

Some people like cars.

People priorities their spending on lots of different things, partly based on their likes and wants, not always just for necessity and need.

I am sure there are things you spend money on that some others would feel was a waste (to them.)

This
some like holidays, or shoes, or handbags, or watches. Cars are my thing and money on something you like isn’t wasted.

It’s only sad for you and others that regard a car as just a metal box that moves us from A to B.

Thinking of someone I know with an expensive car, and up to his eyeballs in debt, I wholeheartedly agree with this statement. However another person I know loves her cars, and can easily afford a naice car. She would say she pays her money and takes her choice!

I personally think keep things simple, and stick to a car you can afford, rather than put it on finance.
