Does anyone feel a really strong connection with a place they don't live or haven't been to?

I have this, and when I went there it felt so familiar and "right". It's not where I live, and probably never could live, but I feel like i belong there! (Completely different country. And continent!) I'm fully aware I'm probably influenced by books, TV etc but I've just never been able to shake this feeling!

I don't know if I'm drawn to the booms because of the place or the place because of the books!

Books!! No booming involved!

Love lots of those too! I loved Olive Kitteridge but struggle to read at the moment as have young DC and whenever is try to read I tend to fall straight asleep. I just remembered Practical Magic too. Lots of crossover with Halloween for me 😂

Before visiting a major city in the South of France for the first time, I just knew I was going to love it, and I did. Have been back a few times since and still have an affinity with it.

Mine is Cornwall. I can't explain the feeling I get when I get into Kernow. Peace, home, contentment. I will move there when dc have left home.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 17/09/2022 16:17

@ToooOldForThis - did you love The Affair? That was peak New England lust for me.

Not me, but our cleaner. She’s Hungarian and is obsessed with Colombia, despite never having been there or, AFAIK, anywhere else in Latin America. She’s learning Spanish and saving up furiously to move there.

Snazzysausage · 17/09/2022 16:20

Yes definitely. North Yorkshire. I did have family connections but none for many years now. When we visit Yorkshire, I feel at home as we get close. I've never felt I belong here where I live despite being born and brought up in the general area. Odd really.

Mangolist · 17/09/2022 16:22

The Shetland Isles! No idea why - I hate the cold, rain and wet, and yet I am desperate to live there. Absolutely insane. Never been either..

mackthepony · 17/09/2022 16:25

I had the opportunity to go to Japan and regret not going there.

The food and general mentality really appeals to me.

Also, Northern Europe. I feel like I'm part Viking somehow! Now live in Canada and I feel best in winter. I just feel at ease with the pines and snow

Your welcome

Rome for both me and dh. We’ve both had recurring dreams since before we met about being there even when the Colosseum was still in use. When I see videos or photos I ‘know’ the areas, they feel familiar in a way that is more than just having seen them on tv. Neither of us has any connection whatsoever to Italy and also don’t particularly want to visit, it’s unsettling rather than anything else.

whoopdedo · 17/09/2022 16:51

I'm from the other side of the world originally but have always felt completely drawn to the cotswolds area. I felt very relaxed and comfortable there and could see myself living there for sure one day.

🤦‍♀️
It's literally in the title, guys. Places you've never been to...

Don't live OR haven't been too. It's literally in the title....

ToooOldForThis · 17/09/2022 17:24

@SomethingNastyInTheBallPool wasn't it great?! Such a good show.

Nowhere I’ve not been to. But when I’m in New England, I’m very, very happy. My children also loves it and DD13 is determined to move to Boston ( after undergrad at UCL, it’s all planned out…). NE is America at its best, especially in summer. I think spending my teenage years reading (literary, but filthy) Updike novels helped my bond with the place. And I’m also a great Strout fan. My best uni friend lives in Vermont and we clicked during her year in the UK, I seem to get on well with Americans and have several American friends. I adore Vermont and Maine. She’s visiting London next week. I can’t wait to see her, we’ll make the Wolesley shake it our laughter ( which I think is a scene in a Nancy Meyers film)

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 17/09/2022 18:21

@ToooOldForThis It was so, so good. Even at the points when it went a bit crap, it was still great.

Derrymum123 · 17/09/2022 18:30

Yes. Liverpool. I have visited though. I feel so at home there, almost like I have lived there in a previous life.

SnoozyLucy7 · 17/09/2022 18:40

Maybe it’s all reincarnation? Past lives that were good lives, and that’s why these places resonate with us, on a deeper lever? I don’t say I believe it completely, but what a wonderful notion.

For me it was San Fransico and surrounding areas. The moment we landed, I felt like I was returning home. It was just a holiday but that feeling will stay with me for always.

Shutupyoutart · 17/09/2022 18:47

Iceland! Never been but have a fascination with it and really want to go can't put my finger on why exactly.

Neverthecornflakegirl · 17/09/2022 19:06

South Wales. Walking around there I just feel at home, like I’ve finally blended in and that I’m finally home. The older generations of my family were Welsh and I grew up hearing Welsh spoken but I’ve never lived there. I’d love to but for now I’m stuck on the other side of the UK.

ToooOldForThis · 17/09/2022 21:02

@SnoozyLucy7 I wondered that too! I remember driving past a house I'd never seen before and briefly thinking quite clearly, oh there's my house!

@billydilly I feel the same way about Iceland. Wondering who your favourite band is as a couple of my faves are from there too?

Similar to @Mangolist I hate the cold, wind and rain with a passion yet have a hankering to live in Alaska.

My DH thinks I'm very odd - he knows I love sun and heat so it doesn't make any sense Grin

haveyouopenedyourbowelstoday · 17/09/2022 21:32

Years ago we visited Dartmouth. I had the strongest feeling that I'd been there before. Which I hadn't. I even 'saw' me.

illiterato · 17/09/2022 21:32

Boulder, Colorado. Never been. Just feel as though I’d love it.
