Cards against humanity

DD13 planning group sleepover. She was planning what they would be doing with one of the other kids who will be there and I overheard the other kid (also 13) say they’d bring Cards Against Humanity. I’ve never played it but have heard it referred to on here by some posters as a bit full on. Am not sure whether to ‘accidentally” discover them playing if and stop it or just let them get on with it as a bit of harmless boundary pushing. As I haven’t actually seen/played it, I have only the impression of it I’ve got from Mumsnet so have no opinion of my own. What would you do?

I'd turn a blind eye.

I think people are very, very out of touch with the reality of what children are exposed to in secondary school if they are horrified by the idea of a 13 year old playing CAH.

I'm not saying that's a good thing, but it's the reality.

What kids are and aren't already exposed to isn't the point. The idea of the game is to be offensive and essentially to play chicken about not being offended.

Which is why I would never play with really people that I actually liked. If they laughed at something I felt deeply offensive I could never look at them the same way again

I guess it depends on your kids school. I played the kids edition with my daughters and their friends aged 11 to 16 and they found it hilarious how naughty some of the cards were. I took pics of some of the funny ones it came up with and it includes ‘me and my dad enjoy the babysitter together’, ‘sit back and relax and enjoy Kevin’s mum’, ‘on the next episode of Dora the explora, Dora explores glens fabulous body’, ‘all I want for Xmas is the gym teacher’, ‘me hungry, me want nipples’, ‘I like licking grandmas panties’, ‘babies come from my dads long snake’. My kids found it hilarious but this was the version for 8yo’s. No way would I be playing the adult version with anyone under 16

I’ve just googled the adult version and the first few cards that popped up mentioned snuff movies, forced sterilisation of the mentally retarded, touching myself listening to my parents shagging and blasting my grandmas anus. I mean wtf??

I just told her I’d overheard, I’d never actually seen the game myself and I know they get exposed to all sorts of porn stuff at school that I’d rather wasn’t happening but I knew the game was pretty full on and I didn’t want them playing it. Said I wasn’t happy myself and it was the kind of game that some parents wouldn’t want their child playing at that age so no. She said she didn’t know anything about it either and they won’t play it. I think she will stop it, I feel she appreciates boundaries even those she moans about.

She sounds like a sensible girl!

FWIW, you can download a pdf of the cards for free on their website so you can see all the cards without buying them and you could print out your own version without the really offensive ones.

etchysketchy88 · 17/09/2022 12:57

The problem with CAH is some of the more "innocent" cards can be pretty dark when paired with certain other "innocent" cards.

The game gets as dark/sick as the people you are playing against.

LoveBugBride · 17/09/2022 13:03

I'd turn a blind eye, we play as a family it's just a bit of fun.

RausageSoul · 17/09/2022 13:13

Take out the worst, I hate it, but not because of offence, it's just not as funny or clever as it thinks it is.

felineweird · 17/09/2022 14:12

It's a revolting game even for adults. I walked out. I definitely wouldn't let a 13 year old play it

Don't make the mistake I made and assume the Disney CAH will be child friendly

1994girl · 17/09/2022 14:21

Absolutely not.

I wouldn’t be happy

we play CAH and have enjoyed it, the first time we played ds1 and i removed all of what we felt were the very dodgy cards especially those containing sex acts i didnt want to have to explain to the children (ds1 17, dd 14, ds2 12)

we were part way through a game when the first dodgy card which I would have sworn we’d removed came up 😳 we’d obviously missed that one, then it happened again 😳 after the 3rd one we realised that dozy ds1 had put all the cards back in 😀

I agree. It’s like a pp said, you can take all the rude sounding cards out, but two completely innocent sounding cards can come out horrible when put together
