The family are not living on the breadline
the family is wealthy very very very rich
Google came to with a wealth of £18 BILLION

they will never be looking down the back of the sofa for a few quid to buy milk till pay day

SJW0 · 17/09/2022 08:32

The majority of that is held on trust for The Crown, not the monarch's personal wealth. The late Queen's personal wealth has been reliably estimated to be about £500m on a good day and The King's is about £250m and about to go up!

TheKingsInk · 17/09/2022 12:57

£500 million, how did she ever survive poor thing must have been down the food bank or scraping her pennies together

The billions figure is everything. Crown Estate, private finances, stamp collection. They've been amassing wealth for a long time. Monarch to Monarch is IHT free. Diana left money to her children and prob trusts as well.

Luredbyapomegranate · 17/09/2022 14:02

I guess he’s been left some? But I think
the vast majority would go to Charles.

Harry will have to do a few more Netflix deals to be as rich as William is now he inherited the duchy of Cornwall.

CaptainBarbosa · 17/09/2022 14:04

She had personal wealth, probably from things like her horses, and investments with family money.

It's estimated to be a couple of hundred million!

So when they say "they have paid this from their personal wealth" it's this pot it all comes from. Like I'm sure they paid the fee for the security of Engines wedding from that pot along with everything else.

cakeorwine · 17/09/2022 14:04

I guess the Monarchy must have had good business ideas in the past?
Invented something special?

Or is there another way they got so much personal wealth?

Precipice · 17/09/2022 14:04

None of which they're paying inheritance tax on, like everyone else would. It's an absolute disgrace.

LIZS · 17/09/2022 14:06

Property, investments, independent income streams.

Nesbo · 17/09/2022 14:09

She is quite far down the list of wealthy monarchs - compared to the king of Thailand’s 30-40 billion dollars she can barely make ends meet!

C8H10N4O2 · 17/09/2022 14:11

The Queen ran a string of 70+ race horses which Charles inherits tax free. Its not called the sport of kings for nothing.

A couple of hundred years of being able to work and operate land and business tax free and inheritance tax free builds up quite a pile.

What does the duchy of Cornwall actually mean? Like what income comes from it?

Is every county a duchy? Does somebody own all of them?

So my main understanding is there are a few Duchy's, and the revenue is things like land tax, and revenue from that area.

But you'll note that the sovereign has passed these on to the government in exchange for the sovereign grant. Charles read that out in his proclamation.

So revenue from what would be the Duchy's and Estates go to the government and they receive a sovereign grant in return. I mean the grant is hardly pennies though 😂

@CaptainBarbosa Interesting, thank you.

From a quick google it looks like there are only Cornwall and Lancaster.

The Queen was the Duke of Lancaster (not the Duchess) and presumably it's Charles now.

All very interesting.

steppon · 17/09/2022 14:47

Her personal wealth is private so no one knows.

Except for anyone with a trust, or anyone inheriting agricultural land (farmers).

felulageller · 17/09/2022 16:54

Sandringham, Anmer hall, Balmoral, Birkhall, Gatcombe and Highgrove are all private properties of the Queen/ Charles.

They also personally own horses, art, Jewellery, property abroad, other investments worth millions.

They never earned it in a conventional sense. As landowners they've made a lot of money from the rent of tenants.

The Duchy of Cornwall makes c £20 million a year from food sales etc.

The Duchy of Lancaster I'd imagine generates more.

It also helps that they don't pay tax.

Discovereads · 17/09/2022 16:57

@felulageller
They pay income tax. Also IHT- only assets inherited from one monarch to another monarch are IHT exempt just for royalty. (the spouse to spouse exemption everyone gets, they also get)

Rents, farmland etc. Scilly Isles belong to Duchy of Cornwall. They own land in various parts of the UK. I think the Duchys pay tax at 40%. The Crown Estate is separate and revenue from that is swapped for The Sovereign Grant. There was an article in The Guardian recently. Only a few will know. Don't forget it's not called His/Her Majestys Custom and Revenue for nothing and HM Government.

elizaregina · 17/09/2022 20:45

Poor Harry.

Who can blame him for wanting to be away from this enforced golden child situation.

One only hopes that the Queen has left him some funds.
No he's not short but he does have issue's that are not his fault eg he is still the son of the king of England and I do imagine he would be a target.
