Is this a suitable gift for a 10 year old party?

DD has been invited to a birthday for a child in her class. Is this Set of pens a suitable stand alone gift? Or does it need something else with it? Link is to papermate 12 pack scented pens.

I would go to Poundland, Home Bargains, The Works etc and pick you a notebook or pencil case to go alongside it, if you can.

How much would you expect to spend? I thought £15 was reasonable...

Reasonable amount but I agree you need a second tiny thing like an eraser

I think it definitely needs some kind of a drawing or notebook to go with it, otherwise it feels a bit incomplete.

GiltEdges · 15/09/2022 19:52

Personally I’d look to pair with a notebook/journal.

Stompythedinosaur · 15/09/2022 19:57

£15 is generous for a party present imo! I would give them as is.

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 15/09/2022 19:59

I would buy a cheap set of gel pens and a notebook from the works. £10 is more than enough for a party gift.

Onceuponachime · 15/09/2022 20:04

I think it’s an odd gift and would give a voucher at that age

MsChatterbox · 15/09/2022 20:06

Hmm I think a 10 year old would prefer £15 than £15 worth of pens...

NeverHadANickname · 15/09/2022 20:08

That is a suitable gift and I'd say £15 was enough to spend but I might have got a cheaper pen set and put it together with a notepad or something to make it seem more of a complete gift.

Daydreambeliever1175 · 15/09/2022 20:11

You chose a lovely gift and I'm sure the child will appreciate it.
It doesn't need anything with it at all. It's perfect as it is.

Violettaa · 15/09/2022 20:14

If the recipient is really into pens, they might well love this.

If they’re not, I agree with others that it looks a bit incomplete - it’s not about the price (I agree £15 is generous), but because pens on their own are a bit workaday.

LionessesRules · 15/09/2022 20:15

If you've already bought them, it's absolutely fine.
If you've not bought them, I think I'd buy some cheaper pens, and a notebook or similar to go with them.
I'd probably spend closer to £10 than £15.

Needmorelego · 15/09/2022 20:19

Is it £15 just for the pens?
If so I would not get those. Go to somewhere like Poundland, The Works or B+M where they sell similar for much cheaper (branded products and own brand) and you could get -as people have suggested - a notebook/diary to go with them.

wherearetheturrets · 15/09/2022 20:24

Unless you know that the child is really into art or something pen related then I wouldn't get pens for a 10 year old.

Does your dd not know anything they're interested in?

I agree that £15 is plenty, I usually spend about £10. How about a pop it? My dds friends have all been into them at that age so if that's a thing in your dds class that might be an idea.

legalseagull · 15/09/2022 20:28

I LOVED scented gel pens at that age. Lovely present as it is

Quisto · 15/09/2022 20:37

My 10 yr old DS would be thrilled to receive those pens and would absolutely appreciate that they were expensive pens.

Moveonswiftlyplease · 15/09/2022 20:43

Both of my DDs, 9 and 10, would really love this gift. A good penset would be an ideal present for them so I assume it would be for other 10 year olds.

cherrysprinkles · 15/09/2022 20:50

My 10 year old dd has said she really likes them! I think I would also get something small to go with them for a gift.

converseandjeans · 15/09/2022 21:01

DD would have loved those at age 10. I would probably put some sweets or cheap pad with them (you can get one for 50p).

I would stick with £10 plus small extra like sweets.

I think it's worth getting quality though rather than a load of cheap Poundland pens.

Needmorelego · 15/09/2022 21:08

@converseandjeans Poundland sell branded pens too.

AnneButNotHathaway · 16/09/2022 07:32

I agree with the PPs saying £15 is enough but egtting a cheaper set and something else would be better. Maybe a notebook or a custom school calendar or cute stickers, etc.

inappropriateraspberry · 16/09/2022 07:43

I'd say budget is £10 max for children's parties. I don't think a 10 yo would really appreciate those pens unless they've specifically asked for them. 12 pens isn't a great gift really. I think they prefer quantity over quality, you can get some nice big craft sets from The Works etc for £10.
