NatWest swapping card but we're going abroad?!

My DD is going on her year abroad in a week, and got an email from NatWest yesterday saying her Visa debit is being swapped to Mastercard and that she will receive the new card in the next 3 weeks, which is probably no good as she leaves on the 25th. She phoned NatWest and the woman said the old Visa card won't stop working until she uses the Mastercard, or if it expires. I already received the new card months ago, and my old Visa one stopped working straight away. It also says on the email that the old one will stop working, so it seems that what the woman on the phone said is wrong. Has anyone been able to speed up the delivery of the new card, or has any ideas of what to do? I suppose she will just have to take cash and either I get on the plane and take it to her or she comes back to the UK, but it's a bit much to get on a plane for the sake of a debit card!

You presumably know it’s possible to send post outside the country, so why couldn’t you just post it on to where she’s staying? No one needs to get on a plane…

If you take it/send it to DD you'll/she'll probably want to let the bank know - if the first time she uses the card it's abroad it could potentially set off alarm bells on their system.

Can't you just courier it to her?

I had this and my old card did keep working for quite a long time afterwards. It was a complete pain in the bum though, as I had 2 years left on the visa and I had to reset all of my online subscriptions.

And the new card still expires in 2 years so I have all this again in another 2 years! The new card also looks a bit strange and not like other debit cards.

Mine took quite a while to arrive, right up to the three weeks mentioned. Carried on with old card for a few days as didn't quite trust the new one. The old one didn't stop working until after I had used the new one so hope this will be the same for your daughter especially if she has notified the bank that she will be using her Visa debit card abroad. Pain having to alter it on all online shopping accounts though
