As much curiosity as anything...sure many are retired but I couldn't imagine asking my boss for leave/ short notice holiday to go and queue to see the queens coffin. Or how I could cover childcare.... more wondering as it's all I think we I see the queue

My workplace has extended compassionate leave (paid) to those impacted by the queens death more than they expected to be, so some have taken a day off to line up to see the coffin

Jesus fucking wept!!

I can easily take time off when I want (bar important meetings), in fact I could have booked this afternoon off at lunchtime if I'd wanted. I'm more surprised/horrified when people say they have to give a lot of notice, as that's never been my reality.

In terms of childcare, well my child has a father so he would do it.

gogohmm · 15/09/2022 16:07

Depends on your job - my boss asked me if I wanted to go with her, in work time (ish obviously would take longer)

Spudlet · 15/09/2022 17:09

I’m self-employed, so if I had nothing booked in I could take the day down from my website and go. As it happens I didn’t have anyone in yesterday, but I didn’t fancy a 6 hour round trip on the train and a 6+ hour queue! But if I still lived in London I might have gone - it’s a moment in history after all.

I don't have a boss so I do what I like, when I like. I guess there are thousands of other people just like me.

Wisteriaroundthedoor · 15/09/2022 17:19

I can take a days holiday as I please, I don’t need to tell my manager why, it’s really none of his business what I do when I’m not at work,

Blimey,

I asked this on another thread and got told. 😂
Like ‘not everyone works 9-5’ and ‘some people work part time’. (I work part time shifts and I couldn’t drop everything but apparently plenty of people can)
And questioning the taking children out of school was also not the right thing to do either.

If your leave year runs with the calendar year, this comes quite late to still have time off. All my leave is booked in now, with things planned for the (few) dates I've booked later in the year - I'd have to cancel pre-booked days and do a lot of unpicking to travel in the week. Perhaps it's not so bad for people whose leave year runs with the financial year.

There's also the factor of, if you let one person go, you'd have to let others go - it's not like booking short notice leave for something that only affects you - and if you work in a job where, say, at least 2/3 of your team have to be in at any one time, that could be difficult.

The only person I know has been doesn't work. Her kids are late primary and early secondary, she had to take them so called in sick for them.

I don't really understand your confusion op. You shouldn't have to justify your a/l or give any reason for it. I'm a sahm now but all my previous jobs I could book a/l at short notice for any reason. Dh has also always had the same setup. I'd have thought that was more normal than people having to give lots of notice for a/l

Interesting in 20 years of work I've always had to have it planned in at least a week or so in advance and rarely seen it booked by others last minute. My jobs have been in magazine publishing, digital marketing, financial services. It's my annual leave but people need to plan workloads, cover and projects

I'm intrigued about kids being off school for this and that being allowed. Clearly, lots of people have very controlling employers though, judging by this.

I think a lot are retired and a lot our overseas visitors.

Whiskers4 · 15/09/2022 20:08

Some people will be on holiday anyway, others work weekends so have their weekends in week. I also read quite a few are flying in from abroad.
