Keep it over the winter to heat your home and cut down your energy bills?

😂

This is brand new information to me! I did not know that cut grass could get hot inside a wheelie bin

don't put grass clippings in the green bin!
use them as mulch- spread them out between plants or under hedges or trees

Don't use as mulch if you have used any kind of weed or moss-killing product on the lawn.

Have you not seen the episode of Fireman Sam where the compost heap catches fire!

Starfishswimmer · 15/09/2022 22:20

So poured three water cans over it last night
and it’s cooled right down

Wondering how to avoid this in future ?

Did it only so because it was so long

Just prop the lid so it's open, with a stick under one of the corners so the air can get in.
That will keep the bin covered enough that rain won't get in, but open enough that the heat can dissipate.
It won't be a problem in the colder part of the year.

I've measured 64'c in a grass clippings pile after two days. It can turn to ash inside but I've never had a mixed pile turn to ash.
