Does this really weird thing ever happen to anyone else?

You know when you’re lying in bed about to fall asleep, you’re mind is just wandering?

I can be thinking of something, anything at all - just say dreaming as I’m about to drop off and all of a sudden I will completely forget what it was I was thinking about.

Sometimes I can feel the thought slipping away and I know I’m about to completely forget whatever it is I was thinking about and then that’s it - gone, and no matter how hard I try I cannot remember what I was thinking/day dreaming about.

Anyone else or am I complete weirdo?

Yes, I've had that happen on occasion. Almost like the two worlds of night and day collide, and the thoughts at the time of collision can't be maintained...

FlutterShite · 14/09/2022 20:54

Yes, I love it when this happens to me. It means I'm drifting off and it's usually when I have the best type of sleep! I love Wandering's description of the collision.

dudsville · 14/09/2022 20:54

Yes, but I have the same experience throughout the day!

In reverse I can sometimes be so surprised by something in a dream that I concentrate extra hard and wake myself up!

I am so glad it’s not just me and your description explains the feeling perfectly!

Yes exactly the same happens to me. We could both be weirdos though 😄 I think it probably happens to everyone though.

thistimelastweek · 14/09/2022 20:55

This happens to me too.

But it's even more intensified on waking. Sometimes, on the point of waking I remember/dream a huge amount of information that I can't recall a moment or so later. It's like an enormous history just beyond my grasp but for a nanosecond it was real.

Levellingdown · 14/09/2022 20:55

All the time. It’s just falling asleep

RoxieLoxy · 14/09/2022 20:55

Also in the morning if I don't recall a dream straight away I can feel that memory going and then the dream is completely forgotten. If I concentrate I can remember it and then keep the memory.

I thought that, but I’m usually awake for a good 10 minutes or so afterwards.

Ahh I am so happy it’s not just me!

@thistimelastweek I have that with remembering dreams when I wake too!

Yes I get this all the time, you know your mind is drifting and your on your way to sleep, then bam! it’s gone and your mind is fully awake so you have to start again.

Noteverybodylives · 14/09/2022 21:33

I’m the complete opposite - if I have a thought I cannot get it out of my head.

I have a pad of paper next to my bed now so I can write down all of my thoughts too else I can’t sleep.

I can also remember my dreams quite well and I’ll think about them during the day.

Sometimes I struggle to differentiate what is real and what happened just in my dream.
It’s usually only small things like I’ll ask a colleague if her cars out of the garage yet and they’ll be confused and it was because it was in my dream.

It sounds like you have very clear boundaries of your real world and dream world but mine are more blurred.

tobee · 14/09/2022 21:42

Yes but only fairly recently have I noticed this and that I was going gaga.

Always like the weird feeling of falling sensation.

DuesToTheDirt · 14/09/2022 21:46

"Almost like the two worlds of night and day collide, and the thoughts at the time of collision can't be maintained..."

I often find that as I'm drifting off a dream comes back to me, from the night before or from a few days ago, that I had been competely unaware of till then. It's like I'm reconnecting to my sleep mode.

Georgeskitchen · 14/09/2022 22:05

Yes quite often. I think its your brain falling into sleep but not quite there, and you come back to consciousness. It's a strange feeling

giantwaterbottle · 14/09/2022 22:41

Yes exactly the same thing happens to me! I was only thinking about this the other night. I usually try and stay really still in my mind when it happens (if that makes sense) as I know I'm about to fall asleep but if I think about it too much I know I'll probably wake again.

Frlrlrubert · 14/09/2022 22:46

For me it's like a mental version of a myoclonic jerk - it wakes me back up.

It's like my brain realised I was about to start dreaming, focused too hard on what the dream was going to be about, and woke itself up, meaning the dream got cancelled.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/09/2022 22:46

Afaik it's normal.

goldenbag · 14/09/2022 23:02

Yes most nights and every single time I drop off when on a train/plane etc

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 14/09/2022 23:11

Agree with others, this is just falling asleep. I guess you just don't always notice it when it's happening. Like @Frlrlrubert, if I pay too much attention to it I wake myself back up.

BlackCatTabbyCat · 14/09/2022 23:20

Omg yes! Exactly as you describe it. It's really frustrating trying hard not to let the thought slip away but it always does. It's actually a recent thing for me I've been experiencing it more often recently but its not something I'd ever noticed before

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 15/09/2022 00:04

All the time. It’s just falling asleep

I thought that, but I’m usually awake for a good 10 minutes or so afterwards.

Because you woke yourself up trying to catch the thought. It's probably only because you wake yourself up by trying to stay in control that you remember the whole thing having happened — most likely this kind of drifting happens all the time when you're falling asleep, and as long as you continue into the sleep state, doesn't get remembered.

Danielle8p · 04/07/2025 16:43

I have this and the thought is usually totally nonsence and something random .. anyone else?

Danielle8p · 04/07/2025 16:44

@Frlrlrubert perfect analogy. Do you suffer with myoclonic jerks?

Frlrlrubert · 04/07/2025 16:58

Danielle8p · 04/07/2025 16:44

Not as much as I did when I was younger, but occasionally.
