Children's DVD collection

I am looking to start a little DVD collection for my dd (she's nearly 2). So far she's only watched short bits of tv like Postman Pat and the waffle dog programme on cbeebies and the teletubbies but she's really enjoyed them. I was just wondering what DVDs (classic and newer ones) were popular with your dcs (and even you when you were young) both at that age and as they got a bit older. I've picked up in the charity shops so far:
101 dalmatians
A tweenies Christmas one
Life size
Finding Nemo
Paddington 1 and 2
A few of the Mary Kate and Ashley films
Mary Poppins
I was just wondering if anyone had any more classic ones that would be good. Not sure if it helps but she is quite girly (likes barbie and pink etc)
My mum also has a vhs at her house so if you can think of any videos that's great too because dd can watch them at hers

My 2 adored the Sound of Music from about the age of 3. Dd1 was
positively addicted to it.

@GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER that's a good one! I wouldn't have thought of it! Thank you!

Barbie have their own films.

My two (thinking of the vhs) loved Rosie and Jim, bananas in pyjamas. Flubber can be very funny but not sure what age its for.

Of course all the old Disney films such as bambi, snow white, sleeping beauty. Cinderella was a big hit with the mice in it.

Jungle Book

Make sure it the original animated one!

Mine loved Octonauts, Nursery rhymes/children's songs (especially if there were actions!), animated Disney films are carefully selected Barbie ones. Myblittle pony was ok as well.

Plus... the Peppa Pig ones. I still get flash backs.

Creepymanonagoatfarm · 14/09/2022 20:40

Winnie The Pooh.
Anything Disney..

GeorgeorRuth · 14/09/2022 20:43

The Railway Children, but not this years version, the original.

OhFatty · 14/09/2022 20:45

Is the Tweenies one the enchanted toy shop? My daughters loved that when they were little We got it out of the library, and it was so good I ended up buying it. I enjoyed it too!

When they were older they both loved Parent Trap (the Lindsay Lohan version)

They liked Disney, but we’re never into Winnie the Pooh or Mickey Mouse. One liked the princess films, and the other liked Cars and Lilo and Stitch

My eldest adored Angelina Ballerina dvds

If she likes Barbie she might like the barbie films. We used to have them all but the favourite was the barbie version of The Princess and the Pauper.

JamMakingWannaBe · 14/09/2022 20:45

I wouldn't bother.
Most things are on iPlayer, Netflix, Disney Channel now.
There is a reason Blockbuster no longer exists.

Always4Brenner · 14/09/2022 20:45

A little princess the 1986 version (beautifully done) for when she’s a bit older.

Youwontbreakmysoul · 14/09/2022 20:48

@JamMakingWannaBe We've only got Iplayer, they don't have much classic stuff for kids on there, it's mainly just their cbeebies programmes

@Pixiedust1234 I didn't know there were Barbie films! thank you for that. My mum still has a few bananas in pyjamas videos from when I was young! I may have to dig those out for dd!

@OhFatty Yes it is the enchanted toy shop! (I think it has another Christmas episode on it as well though). I was a little too old by the time the Tweenies came along but my sister loved them and I used to watch them all the time with her. I remembered the enchanted toy shop and when I saw the dvd got it straight away! Loved that film!

Bear in the big blue house 🥰
The little mermaid
Lady and the tramp
Ratatouille
Encanto
Coco
Octonaughts
Bluey
Peter rabbit (cartoons not live action)

My 2 year old also loves the Nightmare Before Christmas but I don't think that would be a universal thing for 2 year olds 😂

FrankTheThunderbird · 14/09/2022 20:59

DC loved anything musical at that age.

DS2 was obsessed with Fun Song Factory. The original series had Justin Fletcher in. The remakes (which was his preferred cast) had whatshisface from JLS.

But they also didn't have the attention span to watch more than about 10 mins at a time.

Youwontbreakmysoul · 14/09/2022 21:06

@Mommabear20 the little mermaid is a good one, I hadn't thought of that!

Not everyone has Netflix, limited on I player and its much cheaper if you got a dvd player to buy a dvd as its a lot cheaper. Don't assume.

It’s far cheaper to buy second hand DVDs and videos than to subscribe to any of those services. Arguably better for minimizing screen time too. Those subscription services give kids far too much choice and are designed to persuade you to watch more and more.

Rollercoaster1920 · 14/09/2022 21:36

Your local library might rent dad's. Ours still does and is nice for the kids to look at the covers to choose.

Rollercoaster1920 · 14/09/2022 21:37

DVD not dads! That'd be an interesting sideline for the library.....

Wouldlovetobeinthesun · 14/09/2022 21:39

Bagpuss was a favourite and Pingu is very funny. For when they're a little older; the Hanna Barbera classics.

Youwontbreakmysoul · 14/09/2022 21:49

@Rollercoaster1920 our library stopped doing DVDs a while back! It's a shame because they always had good ones!

At that age my dds loved (one was more Tom boy and the other super girly!)
Lilo and stitch
Toy story and a cartoon buzz lightyear movie
Monsters Inc
Paw patrol
Scooby doo films
Moshi monster movie
Special agent oso
Mickey mouse clubhouse
An assortment dvd with different classic cartoons.
Pingu
My little pony movies
Care bears
Land before time
Tom and Jerry
Dangermouse
Frozen
Moana
Panda go panda
My neighbour totoro
The gruffalo and other Julia Donaldson adaptions.
Wallace and gromit
Shaun the sheep
Timmy time

We watched a lot of TV when they were young as we didnt have much money to go places in the winter months so spent alot of time snuggled up watching films or reading stories!

If you are looking for Christmas films too.. we love Mickeys once upon a Christmas (since they were around 2 this is the 1st Christmas film we watch each year they are now 14 and 10!) Also Arthur Christmas, elf, beauty and the beast enchanted Christmas, home alone, santa paws.

Only thing I would say is be careful when watching older programmes as ideas and language used might not always be politically correct today, I threw away a few old bratz films as some of the language shocked me and I wouldnt want dd repeating them. Now we talk about it but when they were young I didnt take chances as didnt want them to repeat things. Also check older books I bought some in a charity shop, thankfully i checked before reading with dd but there was a few stories that used the N word.
