Joint Project Ideas

Posting on here rather than the retirement section for more traffic.

DH has recently retired and I will be retiring in the next year or two. We each have our individual hobbies/friends etc. but I think it would be lovely if we had a joint project to work on as our main hobbies/interests are different.

We have dcs (teenagers still at school and not yet independent) so we are unable to travel which I know we would both enjoy.

DH is practical whereas I am more creative. One idea was to buy a small property and renovate it but DH isn't keen due to the likely amount of work. We both like repairing things/upcycling but doing up a car probably wouldn't appeal to me.

Money is not limitless but we have some money to put toward this. Maybe purchasing a small amount of land and doing something with that?

Has anyone started some kind of joint project with their other half (however large or small)?

Beekeeping.

If you do some research you’ll see it ticks lots of your boxes.

Beekeeping is a good idea Welshrarebit Thank you. Is this something you do?

We did up a caravan - basically a tiny house renovation. It really is tiny, one of the smallest on the market and so very easy to take away.

Put your names on the waiting list for an allotment. Or get a greenhouse, and beds for growing your own fruit and veg, at home.
Join the National Trust and visit a different property each week.
Friends of mine took up golf in their retirement, and are now never away from the golf course!
Park Run every Saturday.

Clay pigeon shooting.

What are your main hobbies/interests? - it may be that there's an overlap.

@Olive4637463 No I am allergic to bees, but have lots of friends who keep bees and seems to be a very good "couples" hobby.

There's the actual beekeeping, honey extraction etc, but also the building of hives, frames etc. Then the jars/labels of the honey bit more creative.

One couple seem to have a perfect split (for them), he does the bee keeping, she makes candles from the bees wax.

Hope you find your thing.

I am looking into a beekeeping course as this was on my to do list and this was the jolt I needed to get started, thank you. I hadn't thought of DH doing the actual bee keeping bit but of course he could get involved in this way.

DH is good at putting together things, I am good at thinking out of the box/design. DH is more high energy/adrenaline/sports. I enjoy having a scenic leisurely walk and taking in the view/more into arts and crafts. Because we have such different hobbies/interests it would be nice if there was something that would overlap.

Maybe a smaller project like building a summer house/some kind of wooden structure might be a good thing to do too - I've always fancied a shepherds hut but I think you can buy one of these without much to do.

I appreciate this is a 'nice' kind of problem to have. We have worked extremely hard over the years (like many other people) to get to this point.

Thank you for your suggestions so far.

Campervan. As a base for his sports, your walks, and a space for some art/craft activities. Maybe a self-conversion?

Olive4637463 · 15/09/2022 13:51

Yes, Doginatent that is another good idea - might take a look into that

Thank you for all the great suggestions so far.

Anyone actually started some kind of joint project/found an interest that overlaps when you have quite different interests?
