Anyone know the minimum amount of milk a baby needs?

I've googled and googled, but I've seen an amazing amount of conflicting advice, so I just wondered if anyone had been told by eg a health professional how much milk a baby needs at each age?

Since my daughter started solids she's slowly drank less and less (expressed breastmilk) she was drinking over 1000ml/34-35oz per day, at 7 months that had reduced significantly to 600ml/20oz and now at 8 months I struggle to get her to drink 500ml.

I'm worried as I'm not sure how much she should be drinking. Some sites say at this age minimum of 600ml/20oz

Thank you all

At that age its around 20oz but that can include milk in cereals, yoghurt, cheese and other dairy products

Its 24oz. At that age milk should be the main source of nutrition so you may need to offer less food to allow for more milk intake. All of the info on the link below is written by qualified professionals and peer reviewed.

So my little one is having about 200ml per day too little. That's going to be hard to try to get the extra into her. She discovered solids and isn't fussed about milk anymore.

I might try to give her an ounce or two before each meal, see how that goes. If I can get 600ml per day in her at least, I'll be happier.

Offer her a beaker of milk with every meal and try and include more dairy heavy meals.

Well nhs says they may be taking 600mls at that age and that's around 20oz

Add milk to cereals and give dairy products. They don't need it all as a drink

I got this from an NCT feeding counsellor when I was stressing about how much / little my baby was feeding - page 16. The reason it's so hard to find info is that these are for guidance and every baby is different. Some might need more or less. At 8m (my wee one is 9m) my baby was having about 4 feeds of 5-6oz a day

Don't forget that if you were feeding direct instead of expressing you'd have no idea how much she was taking! You would judge based on her health, growth and development (and you can always ask your HV to assess these if you're worried).

Wallawallakoala · 14/09/2022 20:21

It actually depends on a lot of things, so maybe take her to a clinic to be weighed and ask the HV there for advice? My dd simply refused feeds turned out she had tongue tie, poor oral function and feeding aversion so was taking much less milk than she should but s weighed ok and was on solids, with yoghurt, cheese, cereals incorporated into this diet.

It's anecdotal but my point is it's very individual at this age.

She's gaining weight well, infact she's jumped from 25th to 50th centile since starting solids. She also loves plain Greek yogurt and things like cheesy risotto, so there's no problems with her dairy intake.

Like I said, I'll try to give her a little breastmilk before her meals to try to up her intake. I guess it was mother's instinct. I was getting worried at the amount of milk that she was drinking and by the guidelines, it looks like I was right to be concerned as she isn't drinking enough. I guess all babies are different and will need different amounts, but I'd be happier if she drank more milk.

Thanks for the posts

I left my 6 month old for 48 hours and was told by doc to allow 30oz a day for him. He took all bar 1oz and my husband said it had been basically the 30oz each day.
