Phone addiction and job hunting! Help

10 replies

NeurologyLady · 14/09/2022 16:34

Although, yes I see the irony in me needing my phone to read replies here!

Basically I'm frantically job hunting and it's caused phone addiction. I can't stop refreshing Indeed and LinkedIn, I keep searching for roles on Google and googling for recruitment agencies.

I know things won't happen overnight but I can't stop checking everywhere.

Anyway, any suggestions on how to reduce screen time, switch off for a bit and enjoy real life?

My thumbs hurt!! more importantly it's beginning to trigger depressive thoughts and feelings which took years to settle previously.

(But yes, I do know reading the replies will contribute to achy thumbs. Please don't tell me off! 🤣 )

I'm also looking for work atm! For me it helps doing other things, classes, sports, social stuff, go out.

I'm the opposite though. I have to force myself to apply for jobs, I hate it so much. Yes, using phone more than normal to procrastinate, for sure.

I hope you get a job soon!

NeurologyLady · 14/09/2022 16:44

Reassuring hugs @Zuyi , I can find other people jobs quickly. But I can't seem to find one for myself.

The remote ones are 500+ applicants. All my friends work full time and my DH is also full time. So I'm quite lonely tbh which is probably what's pushing me to find one ASAP.

Good luck to you too x

Thanks. I've been ignored/rejected on a 2:1 ratio so far. Everyone says, "but there's a worker shortage! They're desperate for people!" yeah? Apparently not desperate enough!

Hi

Set up daily or even twice daily job alerts? to avoid the whole having to refresh.

A job will come along soon. (enjoy the time off) I have literally gone from one job to another without any break in between, but can't grumble as the fixed term job eventually let me of the hook to start the permanent job.

I feel I have reached a point now where I must delete my indeed account! Soon you will be too. Good luck for your applications.

Treat looking for a job as a job. No one closes applications within hours of posting so you dont need to see it instantly. Search for jobs 9 to 5 with a lunch break preferably on a laptop/computer.

RealDeeBliss · 14/09/2022 17:00

Treat job hunting like a job - do it during conventional working hours and do other things outside of that to take your mind off it.

Good luck.

NeurologyLady · 14/09/2022 17:05

Treat it like a job! What amazing and sensible advise. You two have probably saved my mental health from going down the pan. I'll definitely be doing that from now on. Simple, obvious and so so effective.

User thank you! I cannot wait until I can delete it!

Zuyi totally agreed!

Don't keep scrolling through just set up some alerts of roles that you're interested in/suitable for;
User the emails to either apply or skip;
Treat it like a job and focus on it for whatever it takes, 1 hours a day?
Then leave it.
