Post surgery crying?!

Is this a thing? I had surgery under general anaesthetic on Saturday. Not an emergency or anything too serious...pretty routine. I'm recovering well, not in too much pain but today I can't stop crying.

I cried at DH earlier because he gave someone the wrong information about a social event this weekend. I got emotional because my online supermarket shop didn't have everything I needed. I was even in tears on the school run telling my friend about what a dick I am crying over everything today.

Please tell me this is a phase...

Totally normal, rest up, it'll pass.💐

PeloFondo · 14/09/2022 16:21

Yep it is! I get wired after and don't sleep for 2-3 days. Everyone reacts differently

MargotChateau · 14/09/2022 16:21

Super normal, I don’t cry, didn’t cry even at the death of immediate family, but after surgeries I’m always quite weepy. Think it’s the anaesthetic.

It’s the anaesthesic. I cried every time someone came in my hospital room 😳
Nurse said it was common

UnOeufIsEnough · 14/09/2022 16:26

Thank god for that. Thank you for your speedy responses. Actually tearing up at the kindness 🤣😭

I'm normally a stick-on-a-brave-face kind of person, but I'm feeling all the emotions today.

DH keeps backing away slowly. Might have an early night.

Yep I always wake up crying from general anaesthetic and then am emotional for a few days afterwards - it doesn't matter what the procedure it's the GA for me.

BilliardBetty · 14/09/2022 16:41

Yes I’ve had the same experience too.

My lovely mum was a nurse (Theatre Sister) and told me this was a common reaction to anaesthesia, but apparently it takes lots of people by surprise. Lots of rest & fluids, even if you feel OK your body has been through a trauma & you need TLC.

CurlsLDN · 14/09/2022 16:44

Yes I had this for a few days after an op that lasted a couple of hours. It did wear off!

BuildersTeaMaker · 14/09/2022 16:49

Yep, another post anaesthetic cryer here…god I get so depressed for about 48 hours…then I’m fine.
but, you need to sleep ..a lot…I think it’s why you cry..your body is still struggling to get back to sleep whilst you’re getting the anaesthetic out your system.

I get weepy when i have a serious lack of sleep anyway - just the same

Absolutely normal. Often, patients are surprised how fab they feel the morning after surgery. The post-surgery blues hit a day or few later. Eat, drink, rest, sleep. Have a good howl, it’ll all be fine in a day or two.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 14/09/2022 17:34

Apparently very normal. I had a very tearful day about three days after major surgery and couldn't understand why. When I went to see my surgeon for my one week post op check up she asked me which day the tears came. She said it's a come down from the effects of the GA and happens to almost everyone she operates on.

KidsgroveBoggart · 14/09/2022 17:36

Why is it the anaesthetic and not the trauma of the surgery?

UnOeufIsEnough · 14/09/2022 17:38

This is so interesting (and reassuring) to see lots of people have experienced the same thing.

This is the first GA I've had, although I've also had two sections. I felt emotional after the sections but put that down to hormones.
