Is it being coveted in the news, if so how?

I would add that although I am in Ireland I am British, so I probably have more interest than many here.

Strokethefurrywall · 14/09/2022 17:33

I live in the Cayman Islands - as a commonwealth dependency, our flags are at half mast, we are keeping to the mourning schedule of the UK and we had a proclamation ceremony by our Governor.

As a Brit who has lived here 15 years, I'm following BBC and Sky news live streams and there is ongoing coverage in local media outlets.

The funeral will be covered by our Government news channels as well, and Monday has been declared a public holiday.

SenecaFallsRedux · 14/09/2022 17:34

Lots of coverage here in the US.

rainwilder · 14/09/2022 17:40

United Arab Emirates here - lots of news coverage, they loved her here. 3 days of mourning was announced straight after her death. The QE2 is docked in Dubai and they've set up an area outside for people to pay their respects/leave flowers etc.

I‘m in Germany and the coverage of the situation is massive. Right now I‘m watching a news channel showing a feed of people queuing (?) to see the coffin. There was a call-in show on my favourite radio station, too, where people could share their memories of the Queen. Newspapers are full of it.
I‘m a teacher and on Friday we spent a huge part of the day talking about what had happened and will happen. My pupils knew very little but were extremely interested (even though it was mainly conspiracy theories they wanted to talk about 😒)

ivykaty44 · 14/09/2022 17:46

I’m in Spain presently & it’s Been well covered, as pp states it’s odd seeing Carlos III and Isobel II

ive a friend in Oman who has sent me condolences on the passing of our Queen

ivykaty44 · 14/09/2022 17:47

I’m not a royalist, I’ll add but Omanis take their royalty seriously and respect Charles for attending their Sultans funeral a couple of years ago

Yes on Irish channels but most people in Ireland have all the uk channels too so it is wall to wall on those obviously.

Which is why it is easy to ignore and only watch our own 😁

In Spain, it was wall to wall coverage on TV the night she died. I haven't watched TV news since, but there are still several articles every day in the papers, many about connections to the Spanish royal family.

I hadn't realised until now that they translate royal names here - it's strange seeing them called Isobel II and Carlos III

That's interesting- I hadn't realised names were also translated to their Spanish equivalent!

MichaelAndEagle · 14/09/2022 17:57

I literally had no idea Isobel was the Spanish form of Elizabeth.

AmberGer · 14/09/2022 17:59

Me neither @MichaelAndEagle

Learned something new today 😊

Mfsf · 14/09/2022 18:14

I live in the U.K. but watch Tv from Portugal and Cyprus . It started by being a bit as in the U.K. with condolences etc but now they are both starting to question if people in the U.K. are sheer lunatics . It’s queen 24/7 , cancelling surgeries , closing schools and above all really questioning King Charles and the monarchy .
Also massive gossips about the fashion and if William cheated on Kate

mackthepony · 14/09/2022 18:14

In Canada here and it's been reported on... But not that much. Federal employees will have a day off on Monday.

The usual difference in reporting between Quebec and the ROC on anything to do with the Royals.

mackthepony · 14/09/2022 18:15

Also noticed that the French news in Canada refers to Elisabeth - which kind of gets my goat really

DonnaHaywood · 14/09/2022 18:32

MichaelAndEagle · 14/09/2022 17:57

I literally had no idea Isobel was the Spanish form of Elizabeth.

Me neither! Eli[s]abeth is also a not uncommon name here, although it may not have been 70 years ago. Perhaps it's a tradition related to regnal names.

YennefersDress · 14/09/2022 18:58

Isabel is an old Occitan variant of Elizabeth, usually the Spanish way of spelling it as well, Isabelle being the French variant and I think Isobel is Scottish.

Natsku · 14/09/2022 19:29

Finland here, not sure about TV news as I haven't been watching but there's been some articles in the newspapers (probably more in the tabloids but I haven't looked). Weirdly there's only been one article in the English language news and that was just to say what the President and Prime Minister tweeted about it.

Natsku · 14/09/2022 19:32

In the Finnish news they're calling her Elisabet but not they're not changing Charles' name

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 14/09/2022 20:01

Canada here. As an expat I’m watching the BBC coverage anyway, although I’m still debating whether to get up early on Monday to watch the funeral live.

A Federal day of mourning has been declared but my province (Alberta) still hasn’t made a decision on whether there will be a holiday on Monday or just a minute’s silence. I think the fact there has been no comment yet is very disappointing. But given that they haven’t legally recognised Truth and Reconciliation Day at the end of month gives us an indication of how it will go.

AnuSTart · 15/09/2022 08:15

Strangely in my bit of Germany (maybe it varies between Bundesländer) it's all a bit irrelevant. You can see it on Al Jazeera etc but not on the domestic channels. Maybe I don't watch enough TV and I am missing this 'massive coverage' but no one round here gives a hoot. Thankfully. Though my daughter did say that people were coming up to her in school to offer their condolences!

purplethings · 15/09/2022 09:21

Blissfully unaware here !

Lauraa7 · 15/09/2022 09:45

I’m in Australia and an expat, so I’m watching the BBC but lots of coverage, conversations on the radio. Lots of media have flown to the UK to cover.

IpanemaChic · 15/09/2022 09:47

Fairly big news in The Netherlands. I’m in UK atm but I’ve just checked De Telegraaf and the coverage in the top most read news. Also quite a few gossip-type stories about W&H…

Three members of the Dutch royal family will attend the funeral.

chatw0o0 · 15/09/2022 09:54

In Australia. Lots of coverage and roving reporters talking to people queuing up to see the coffin, etc. Seems to be trumping all other news but I think it's getting slightly less so now (as I sit and watch the news right now).

We also have a National Day of Mourning on 22 Sep, which is also a public holiday;

FrenchFancie · 15/09/2022 10:00

I’m now back in the uk but follow Cyprus press as we used to live there until recently.

it’s not big news at all - the anti British sentiment is quite high at the moment following the platinum jubilee (some sections of the Cypriot community blame the Queen for the execution of an 18 year old towards the end of British rule in Cyprus - 1955 or similar and there was a lot of bad feeling reported in the press about that time). Most comments are either ‘have the brits gone a bit mad with the public grief’ or (unfortunately) expressing some pleasure at the Queens passing it makes me sad because ultimately whatever you think of the monarchy a family has lost a relative.
