Wisdom tooth... please help 😭

Hi lovely people

My wisdom tooth broke when I was brushing my teeth on Sunday. I've been cleaning the area with salty water and visited my dentist tonight who prescribed antibiotics. My dentist has also referred me for removal of the remaining bits of tooth and to get another wisdom tooth out. I have private dental care so hopefully my hospital appointment will come in soon for that.

The pain isn't bad to be honest I've been taking calpol. But when I talk, swallow or basically use my throat it is agony. I am finding it really difficult to eat and drink. Today I have managed half a childs small yoghurt pot and 3 spoons of soup. I am so hungry.

Do any of you lovely wise people have any advice on how I can get my throat back to normal so I can eat and drink. I don't want to be precious but the pain is up there with childbirth.

Thanks so much

You are just going to stick to smooth foods , soup porridge yoghurt and milkshake for a while or anything you can have at room temperature
I hope you feel better soon , it's horrid

Thanks @JoeyThePrawn yeah this is definitely horrible I wouldn't wish it on anyone. I have all those foods in and can make a pot of soup tomorrow. I manage to get the food into my mouth but when swallowing it over and down. Oh dear God its hell.

Why is your throat hurting though?

@GoodVibesHere my side of my mouth, throat and tongue are sore. Slight swelling and infection.

I had a wisdom tooth out last year which was absolutely fine until I got dry socket. The only thing that comes close pain wise are the very regular (double) ear infections I get every 1-2 months! I really do sympathise.

What I would recommend is continue with salty water to keep the tooth as clean as possible. Alternate paracetamol and Ibuprofen, taking them every 3 hours. Take them even if you don’t feel like you need them and even if you have to wake yourself up to take more. Use a warm (not hot) hot water bottle on the side of your face for pain relief. Stick to soft or liquid foods at room temperature. I also found drinking through a straw helps as I could get liquid right to the back of my throat. Hopefully you’ll start to feel some relief once the antibiotics start to work.

I meant to add, hope you are feeling better soon @DutchessOfMuck.

Try putting clove oil on the broken tooth. Might help with the pain and swelling

Thank you @TattiePants your ear infections sound really grim. Hope you have been referred for investigations for it. I am much worse today and can't even use a straw as it's too sore. I cant speak at all. Just realized this morning that dentist has given me capsules rather than liquid antibiotics. I opened it up and put it in some water, it was hell on earth getting it over.

@Backofthenet20 can you get that at the pharmacy?

Today is a utterly shit day! Feeling so sorry for myself.

You've only just started on the antibiotics. Take them according to instructions and follow religiously. They should start kicking in soon and things will improve. There's not much more I would suggest ( as a dentist).
Take your normal painkillers, and try snd hit salty mouthwash and an ice pack ( frozen peas in a tea towel.)
Hopefully you'll feel better soon. Don't poke the area and avoid putting anything else around the area, including clove oil, as it might irritate it
