Adding DD onto car insurance policy

Funkyslippers · 12/09/2022 12:43

Our car insurance is up for renewal exactly at the time DD is off to uni. This means she'll only be driving the car for about 12 weeks of the year (when she comes home). To buy an annual policy for just me & OH it's £179. To add DD on it's over £500! I can't find anywhere that will add her on for a few weeks here & there. So I either don't add her on & she won't be able to drive at all (that would be an inconvenience to both us and her) or pay the extra £300+. Is there any other way round this does anyone know? Any good insurance companies I could try? Thanks

Have you tried Veygo?
I have my twinnies learner insurance through them you can get insurance for a week/month what ever you want.

Thanks but they're quoting £200 for a month. Considering we're going to need 3 of these it will work out much more expensive. You would think considering I stated on our insurance quote that she's a student living away from home that she won't be driving it very much!

Have you tried Marmalade? They have specific student cover for when they come home so they just insure themselves for that time (have to prove they are a student).

Direct Line are brilliant for this, we used them all the years DC were at uni. You can add a temporary driver for up to 90 days (I think). Most of all there is no admin charge, most companies charge a £25 admin fee but DL dont.

Both DC passed tests at 17 and are now early 20s with their own cars.
A few times recently I've added DS for a few days and the cost was zero.

Ask your insurance company. We put ds on our policy when he passed his test, when he got his own car we removed him from our insurance and got a refund for the remaining months he wasn't on it. (Direct Line)

Watching with interest!

We have an Admiral multicar policy, and ended up leaving both DDs on the policy all year. They were coming and going so much and needed the car every few weeks, but it was so expensive to add them for short periods and take them off again - I don't think our policy is set up for this kind of scenario. Marmalade might be worth a look.

I've tried Admiral Multi Car and Marmalade - both much more expensive. I will try Direct Line and let you know how I get on. Thanks

I do think however you do it insuring young people to drive is an expensive business.
I liked Marmalade because it was completely separate to my car insurance though, and covenient to add as and when.

I just add ds to our insurance when he is at home - I did it at Easter and then in the summer. With Churchill you can do it for up to 90 days. I eventually added him as a permanent extra driver because of the 90 day thing, but you can remove them again when they return to university in September. It's a bit of a faff, but saves around £500 a year over having him on the policy all the time.

Funkyslippers · 12/09/2022 21:00

gatehouseoffleet how much extra was that please for each 90 days?

I've got a policy with LV - costs about £50 to add my student son on for a max of 6 weeks - can do this 4 times per year.

sidewayswalking · 12/09/2022 21:07

I can't find anywhere that will add her on for a few weeks here & there.

I use direct line and just add DD on if and when I need to. She has her own car but occasionally she needs to use mine. We have done this for about 3 years now without issue.
