Most of the ones I’m coming across the reviews are complaining that it doesn’t keep the food warm, want one for school for DD (5) that will be easy enough for her to use so she can have warm food at school. Any recommendations of one’s that’s actually keep food warm please?

We have 2 Thermos stainless steel Food King flasks ( the smaller ones) and the remains of lunch are still edible temp at 3.30pm when I empty them.

I'd second the thermos metal ones.

A general tip is to pre-heat the flask with boiling water.
Then pour it back into the kettle before filling with the food.
We used proper Thermos ones for soup for DD last year and actually had to not pre-heat as otherwise it was too hot at lunchtime.

Yup we have those too, get used at least once a week and still going strong after 3 years. They are so good at retaining heat the kids asked me not to preheat them with boiling water as the food was too hot to eat by lunch!
The only down side is they can't be put in the dishwasher, and you have to be on top of retrieving them and disposing of uneaten food and washing them up before yukky situations 'evolve.

DS had one of the smaller thermos food king flasks with a folding spoon built in - it's lasted years. Agree with the pre-heating of the flask with boiling water before you put the food in, it makes a big difference.

Thermos
DD used to complain that her food was too hot!
I heated it up with boiling water first
It is quite heavy though
DD loved hers and now has it at university

DC had these ones from Wilko. Currently out of stock but if they get them back in - buy them. They are brilliant. Keep the food piping hot according to DC and very easy to wash. I used to heat the flask first by swilling it in boiling water, then add hot food. Still very warm at lunchtime, having been prepped at about 7.30 am.

We have both thermos and SHO. Both are good, you can get bigger SHO ones. The dc use them for school, they come down, stick the kettle on and fill the flask then have breakfast and leave it to warm. Then stick food in microwave to heat, empty water from flask and bung hot food in. Stays lovely and hot.

Brilliant thanks all. Great tip about the hot water!

Another fan of Thermos here.
And , yes to preheating.

FarmerRefuted · 12/09/2022 17:59

Double check your school's policy on these first though, our school doesn't allow hot foot/hot liquids (including water) to be brought in packed lunches for safety reasons.

Another vote for SHO. It keeps my coffee hot for ages. So much so I have to add cold water other I'm swearing at the traffic lights near work and I've burned my mouth!

Another one for the thermos one, with preheating being essential. Check your daughter can open it though, because as it cools the air inside takes up less space so it can create something of a vacuum within the flask that makes getting the lid off difficult. I found it essential to take the lid off before I touched any other food as even a hint of grease made it hard to remove.
