I want to change my job but I’m clueless

I’m hoping that Mumsnet can help me…

I really am starting to dislike my job, I’ve been told I have that there is no scope for progressive despite being told that there would be, I’ve been doing the same job to 2 years and even though my job has developed and changed I’m stuck on the same wages doing 3 peoples jobs as several team members have left and never been replaced…

Where do I start? I want to move away from my current job and start progressing up the change so to speak.

Are agencies the done thing now? Send them my cv and see what comes back? Do companies all use them?

What sort of job are you in now and what are your skills and salary expectations?

This - need a bit more info to advise.

Using agencies or not will depend a bit on your field.

I would recommend speaking to a qualified careers adviser, google National Careers Service. They are free, no need to pay for support. They will be able to help you assess your skills and career expectations. Good luck!

SudocremOnEverything · 12/09/2022 08:14

It’s literally impossible to advise without any information about sector, qualifications, skills, other experience, etc.

Work2live · 12/09/2022 08:14

Definitely need to know what job you do.

I think the main thing to do is work out whether it’s actually what you want to do, or if you want a different job entirely?

Then look for similar roles, or make a list of your transferable skills and research slightly different jobs that would be a good fit.

I currently work in construction, my most recent qualifications are, a level 6 NVQ, a SMSTS, first aid I am also doing Prince 2 foundation & practitioner.

I am thinking the project management is where I want to go, doesn’t have to be within the construction industry (in fact I’m fed up with it)

I have had both indirect and direct responsibility of budgets, have managed my last project on my own with very little support.

@CluelessAboutFindingANewJob sounds like you’ll have loads of valuable skills that could transfer well to lots of different industries.

I would re-do your CV and target it towards project management roles. Highlight all the skills and experience you have that are directly relevant to project management.

I work in the tech industry, we’re always looking for project managers, and some of the people we hire don’t actually have tech industry experience.

ThisisCollie2022 · 12/09/2022 09:49

I don't recommend The National Careers service! They're absolutely awful.

@CluelessAboutFindingANewJob I think you need to do some CPD. If you're in construction then Local Authority Building Control (LABC) do lots of courses. Which make you more employable for new roles.

ThisisCollie2022 · 12/09/2022 09:54

@Work2live could you tell me a little more about becoming a project manager in tech? My degree is in coding and I have 10 years of project management experience. What would make me stand out? Agile, scrum etc? Budgeting?

Where do you advertise roles? I think I've been looking in the wrong place.

Are these roles often hybrid, remote or on site?

Sorry to bombard you! I'm looking for this exact role after redundancy 😄

Work2live · 12/09/2022 10:22

@ThisisCollie2022 sounds like you have the right sort of background! I’m not a PM by the way but I do have good relationships with a lot of ours!

My place are keen on Agile, but also happy if you have waterfall, prince2 etc. Experience of managing budgets is essential, along with reporting, providing proposals and statements of work.

We are mostly remote-first with hubs in the UK and US. We have a big presence in London and lots of people down there go into the office regularly, but I’m up north so I only tend to go in once every 2-3 months (this is usually optional apart from the occasional team day and always expensed).

I know we advertise a lot on LinkedIn, and we also advertise on Indeed.

SudocremOnEverything · 12/09/2022 10:40

I’d say LinkedIn for PM roles. There are always loads of vacancies advertised.
