What else is going on in the world?

Let me preface this by saying I’m a Royalist and loved The Queen, she is rightly being mourned and celebrated in the most fitting way and deserves our attention.

But. What else is actually going on in the world? Does anyone have any clue? The whole news cycle and websites that would usually be informative are now just all about the Queen. It’s like everything else has stopped since Thursday and yet it really hasn’t. It’s beginning to unnerve me which I appreciate is probably the early signs of a news dependancy, I’m not the only one am I? Twitter is my only hope unless someone has tips on where I can get my news fix?

Ukraine has made progress in recovering territories captured by Russia.
Chelsea have sacked their manager.
2 children have died in a car fire in Ireland.

I must say though how quickly things have changed here. This time last week, Boris was still PM and the Queen was still with us.
All change in less than 7 days.

21 years since the 9/11 but not heard a single thing on the news about it.

Yes OP - this.

I want to be informed of what's happening all round the globe, not just 1 event here. I am astounded everyone thinks it's ok, to be honest.

Ukraine might finally be turning the tide.
Pakistan are trying to recover from the floods.
Rees-Mogg snuck something out on Friday about energy, I've forgotten the detail.

Try Al Jazeera news channel - very international and far less bias than on BBC news channels

The BBC have coverage of Biden's speech but I think only because he mentioned the Queen!

There’s this amazing thing you can do on websites. Use a finger to move the screen upwards (the technical term is scrolling). Look at what you can see now. I know! It’s like magic.

Indeed it is magical. Scroll away on skynews.com and see how far you get. 🙄

No thanks: BBC, Guardian & Times.

FWIW, I'm in the US. Plenty of Queen and plenty of 9/11 21st anniversary, but some of the other stories covered today (various network TV news + CNN):

Ukraine says they have retaken the entire Kharkiv region.
Russia hit Dnipropetrovsk power grid, scattered blackouts in central Ukraine.
Swedish national election: centre-left win initially projected from exit polls but centre-right bloc catching up.
Putin, Xi Jinping set to meet in Kazakhstan this week.
Earthquake in Papua-New Guinea, 4 confirmed dead.
Floods in Pakistan (ongoing); Antonio Guterres continues UN appeal. for int'l aid
Flash floods in Chicago.
California wildfires (ongoing).
UN Human Rights Council opens in Geneva on Monday; may or may not censure China for human rights violations in Xinjiang.
Netherlands rail strike ended, 8% payrise negotiated.
Spanish novelist Javier Marias has died.
Antigua and Barbuda plan referendum on becoming a republic.

TempsPerdu · 12/09/2022 00:05

I hear you OP. I’m finding the blanket coverage of royal stuff (and virtually nothing else) more than a bit sinister. It all feels feels incredibly insular and slightly disorientating.

I know that technically we can watch Al Jazeera, read ‘Die Welt’ in translation or scroll down the news sites until we find something non-Queen related (and I have done), but we shouldn’t have to go to those lengths to find out what’s going on in the outside world, and let’s face it the average person won’t bother. Most people will just skim read all the headlines about the Queen and leave it there, meaning that important issues like Ukraine, the Pakistan floods and the shooting of Chris Kaba will all fly under the radar. And whatever happened to the cost of living crisis that was such a pressing concern until last Thursday?

Neverendingdust · 12/09/2022 08:41

@TempsPerdu disorientating is exactly how it feels. It’s so bizarre, yes you can find the odd few stories of international news yet the vast majority of the space is taken up with Royal news.
