Will taking 40 mg of citalopram stop working after a while ?

I have increased from 20 to 40 mg 3 weeks ago and I’m feeling so much better, normal and happier. However, I’m worried this improvement won’t last. Would love to talk to people who had long term benefits on 40 mg of citalopram! Thank you

I was on 40mg for a while. The only thing I found as time went on is that I felt a bit emotionless. So great that the anxiety/depression had lifted but replaced with feeling a bit empty sometimes.
GP said that was the maximum dose. So I started to think about reducing the dose a bit.
But it was such a game changer for me, no regrets at all and so pleased to have got the help. I think everyone’s different though.

I was on 40mg for a couple of years. I'm now on 30mg. Psychiatrist said I could stay on 40mg as long as I liked, forever if it was beneficial. I never felt it losing it's benefits. I tried to drop to 20mg with the view to coming off it completely but symptoms increased. I am now comfortable on 30mg and like knowing I can go to 40mg if need be.

I suppose there is always the possibility of a drug stopping working for individuals but I honestly wouldn't worry about it, just see how things go. Just remember that things can still go wrong, everyone has dips in their mood, so if you have an off day don't automatically assume the dose isn't working.

Take care.

If it does they can increase it.

I've been on 40mg for over 8 years and have been fine. I am slowly weaning myself off now and have got down to 20mg.

Ladyoftheprom · 11/09/2022 19:32

I've been on 40 for 12 years - still working well xx

Penguintears · 11/09/2022 19:34

I'm on sertraline so not the same but I'm on the lowest dose and it's still working really well after a year.

N0va · 11/09/2022 19:34

I was on varying between 100mg and 150mg for nearly 10 years and found that with regular reviews it maintained effectiveness when we increased and decreased in line with what I needed

Whoops read this as sertraline not citalopram, ignore my last message!

Hi,

I am new to this so apologise for randomly landing on this thread however I’ve read it all and it seemed I’d be able to get some advice here

I started with anxiety / panic attacks after a divorce which was a shock. I was prescribed sertaline but lasted 2 days and got took off it as it did not agree with me at all

I was then given 20mg citalopram and 40mg proponolol (up to twice a day). I have only been taking one as I have a love resting heart rate anyway so found two dropped it too low.

Im now on week 20 and for 2.5 weeks I’ve been so anxious when I was doing so well, numerous times a day for no reason I get that sinking chest feeling and I need to get away from where ever I am and go home. I have managed to ride it out and carry on my shopping or walk however this has come from no where

I spoke to the GP today who said the either increase the prop up to 3 times a day or increase citalopram to 30mg

I have gone for the citalopram but am terrified that it will make things worse, the side effects etc or if the dose will be too high and do what sertraline did. I am just after any advice as I was doing so well and for whatever reason for a few weeks Ifs not keeping the edge off my anxiety/panic

Many Thanks
