Supermarkets - Price & Quality

Rosebud1302 · 11/09/2022 07:49

For people who have shopped at all 3 of Morrisons, Tesco and Sainsburys, opinions on difference in price of a weekly food shop (nothing extravagant, your standard food shop) and also food choice/quality comparison?

Only interested in those 3 shops please :)

Thank you!!

I always find Sainsbury's more expensive but I think they Carey a lot more luxury brands which I get sucked into buying.

Morriston seems a little bit cheaper than tesco, but don't regularly shop there so can't give a proper comparison.

Honestly, I find most of the appeal is in the atmosphere of the supermarket itself. Tesco has this busy, discounty vibe, Sainsburys has a slightly more organised feel and Morrisons is in the middle.

Sainsburys used to be the most expensive, but Morrisons has overtaken it for some reason, and I prefer the Sainsburys taste the difference range. For me Sainsburys food feels more indulgent, whereas Morrisons appears to have more variety. Tescos for me is just a place to shop.

They're doing lots of price conpsrisons these days due to prices going up:

If you do a search on Google for exactly the same item, Waitrose is invariably 25% more at least. If you want to feel better about yourself by wasting money go for it! (Unpopular opinion)

Morrisons is expensive unless you can get everything you want on deal.

Sainsbury's barely do deals anymore. It's a bit pricey.

I feel like Tesco is a bit cheaper than Sainsbury's but not hugely.

steppon · 11/09/2022 08:05

Never lived near a Morrisons, much prefer Sainsburys to Tesco & prefer Sainsburys to Waitrose.

MaryJoLisa · 11/09/2022 08:13

I don't like Tesco, the stores always feel a bit grubby and chaotic. I don't think they are very cheap either. (Not that anywhere is).
Morrisons - I like the Marketplace bit and don't find the prices too and comparatively.
Sainsbury's - always feels up itself. Expensive and I find the fresh stuff goes off quickly. And I hate their layouts and very high shelves.

BarbaraofSeville · 11/09/2022 08:16

Morrisons used to be notably cheaper than the other two, but that might not be the case any more. Their butchers and fish counters are probably the best of all the supermarkets, except possibly Waitrose, but at a significantly lower price. Some of their bakery and other own brand stuff is very good - their own brand pittas are excellent.

Sainsbury's own brand might be slightly better quality, but is more expensive unless you shop carefully.

Tesco is the worst of both worlds in my experience. Expensive, poor quality, busiest, worst reputation for supplier relations, animal welfare etc.

Given the choice of the above 3, I would go to Morrisons then Sainsbury's and Tesco only if there was no other choice.

PAFMO · 11/09/2022 08:17

Agree with most of the above. Sainsbury's is definitely nicer. Tesco seems to me to be the cheaper with Morrison's in the middle.
If you take like for like, the prices are probably not as different as you might think. A pound of lurpak is probably the same in all 3. Sainsbury's luxury sausages are going to be more expensive than Tesco value, and vice versa.

JoeyThePrawn · 11/09/2022 08:20

I stopped going to tesco when all the staff were eating at the checkouts years ago , vom
Sainsbury is good but expensive compared to my local aldi
Morrisons near me is clean , well stocked and much cheaper

onemouseplace · 11/09/2022 08:21

Sainsburys TTD range is by far the nicest of the premium ranges.

I also really rate their Hubbards basics range as well

BigFatLiar · 11/09/2022 08:23

Around here Morrisons have better meat & fish counters (tesco shut theirs down) nice bakers and some hot food.

Sainsburys a bit expensive and limited selection.

Tesco bigger selection, ok quality.

Fresh veg these days is a bit questionable in any of them just now.

cliffdiver · 11/09/2022 08:34

Morrisons used to be cheaper, but prices have gone up considerably in the past 3 months.

Morrisons also seem to carry fewer own brand (and cheaper) alternatives than Tesco or Sainsbury's.

My local Morrisons is often poorly stocked - particularly the fruit and veg. And the fruit and veg, when available, is poorer quality than T or S.

If you have a Club Card, Tesco could be the cheapest out of all 3. Quality and stock availability seems fairly consistent.

Sainsbury's fruit and veg has deteriorated in quality recently.

Sainsbury's have lots of Aldi/Lidl price matches (I think Tesco do this too), so your overall shop could be cheaper if you tailor it to the price matches.

alrightfella · 11/09/2022 08:48

Sainsbury's is my favourite, followed by Tesco then Morrison's.

Morrison's often doesn't have things that I want (every day stuff not obscure items) or is out of stock.

It also stocks the smallest range of vegetarian and free from food.

Thanks everyone for your advice.

Sainsburys for us. Used to get ocado and it’s less expensive and just as good quality. I keep getting money off vouchers and nectar points vouchers plus really rate them for variety.

Morrison’s always looks a bit nuclear apocalypse where we live and their own brand cheese is hideous.

I don’t mind Tesco for a few things but for a full shop I don’t love the quality.
