5 year old won't (can't?) chew and swallow food properly

DS is 5 and he's always been really fussy with food so I just thought he was eating slow because of that but recently over the past few months I've noticed he often doesn't seem to be able to swallow his food without a mouthful of drink to 'help' him swallow.
he also quite often keeps food just in his mouth for ages, he's come home from school before with a mouthful of food that he must have kept in his mouth since lunchtime
I'm really worried he's going choke one day if he carries on.
I've talked him through step by step, encouraged him to take small bites and chew lots etc but it doesn't help.
It seems to be getting worse with time not better, i am going to book him a GP appointment because i'm starting to think it could be a physical problem with his mouth in some way, or possibly psychologically something to do with the texture because he does seem to have sensory issues in other areas too.
Has anyone had a similar issue? Or any ideas what the reason for this could be

Forgot to add, he also does struggle with fine motor skills and gross motor skills too he's fairly uncoordinated which could be do something to do with it

Find out if you can self-refer, if not ask your GP to refer him to SLT and OT, it could be dyspraxia.

You need a Speech Therapist really. I'd pay private if it's achievable, that sounds like it needs prompt attention.

I have pondered dyspraxia before because he really struggles with writing and things likes getting himself dressed, zips buttons etc and he's very clumsy

Are his tonsils enlarged? My ds needed his removed as they were blocking half his throat, he was having to chew everything to mush to be able to swallow anything.

My DD was the same, the OT was a fantastic help when she was young. SLT can help with exercises for chewing and swallowing etc.

It's also transpired that as well as dyspraxia, she has hypotonia (low muscle tone) which affects not only her ability to do tasks, but her stamina and other things.

It's really worthwhile getting your child assessed by both OT and SLT, they often work in a team.

You need to speak with the school and SEN lead about this as there is a choking issue, maybe give him cut up food or pasta for lunch, any food that could be easier to swallow. Could be a SEN thing or something wrong with tonsils? Book a drs appointment asap as well.
