Javelin arse / those shooting pains

isthismylifenow · 10/09/2022 06:45

Omg I got invaded by what felt like a thousand little devils stabbing me with knives last night.

Wtf are these pains? They had me paralyzed for what felt like an hour. If I moved the little stabbing fuckers went to another spot, after they had already attacked my ovaries, uterus, womb and bum.

I always thought it was related to a period cycle, but I'm in peri and only have some spotting now.

I tried to rub my stomach to ease it a bit, that didn't work, but it was definitely swollen and hard and in some type of spasm.

I know a lot of you know what I'm talking about, but my God this was a bad one. I'm still tender this morning too.

And the randomness of them, that is another mystery.

Ooh there was a great thread on this a while ago, where several doctors have an explanation.

JustDanceAddict · 10/09/2022 08:17

No idea! I only get it when I’m on and that hasn’t happened for a few months now due to peri!

donedone · 10/09/2022 08:32

Proctaglia is the actual name for this.

Scintillae · 10/09/2022 08:42

I have endometriosis and used to get those pains during my period. I’m menopausal now, so thank goodness they are gone now.

KangarooKenny · 10/09/2022 08:43

I do think it’s cyclical. If you’re spotting you’re still having a sort of cycle.
I find sitting on the loo helps it go.

Fiwere25again · 10/09/2022 08:45

Sounds like IBS. Onre of the tests is to literally blow air into the rectum; if you get shooting pains, it's an indicator

PAFMO · 10/09/2022 08:49

There are different types. Some last for seconds, I'm one of the lucky ones for whom it lasts about half an hour.
Nobody really knows what it's due to, and more men than women get it apparently.
Mine did seem to be connected to ovulation (and on one of the threads there was mention of some pouch emptying of blood or filling with blood during the cycle maybe causing it) but I'm 57 almost and well past menopause so i can't see it still being that.
Tip: as soon as you feel it coming on, sit on the edge of the bath and dangle your arse down into it, so your hips are higher than your bum. It seems to help. As do strong painkillers and heat. Jump into a boiling shower and point the shower behind you, or get a hot water bottle.
I was unfortunately walking round Lisbon last time I got it so none of the above was appropriate!

WildFlowerBees · 10/09/2022 08:50

I have endometriosis and around ovulation this happens to me. I take busopan as soon as I feel it and have to walk/pace until it goes away after 30 or so minutes. Get checked out.

isthismylifenow · 10/09/2022 09:22

I have Googled now, thanks DoneDone.

I think I am too one of the lucky ones (not) as it seemed to go on for ages. If (and I hope not) I have another bad attack like this one, I'll try get to a spot like the bath or loo but there was no way I could even move last night. I have had shorter ones in the past, but not for this length of time.

Now I'm wondering if this is yet another blessing I have succumbed to in peri Menopause.

Sigh.

I get this and have done since my teens and I also get pain when I'm ovulating which lasts around an hour. I can literally feel a "ping" when the egg is released and then the pain stops. It is quite common apparently, the nurse who did my last smear test said it was just one of those things that some lucky people get and nothing to worry about.

I was diagnosed with endometriosis by exclusion only (so they've never done the checking for scar tissue bit) when I was heavily pregnant with DS after several hospital admissions with abdominal pain. I'd always had awful periods and loads of pain. They are now irregular and not as painful but I still get lots of these pains in the week or two before I actually start bleeding. GP didn't seem remotely bothered so I think I'm stuck with it and I just have lots of warm baths and hot water bottles to try and manage the various aches and pains!

GodspeedJune · 10/09/2022 09:32

Do you have any symptoms of endometriosis? This is common with endo.

No not at all, always been fairly lucky in that department. Stable periods, never too heavy but I do have IBS. I'm 52 now and only now starting to have more reduced periods, so I am wondering if it's something to do with this. Something like a final farewell or something.

I have taken a buscopan as per Wildflowers post, as I'm quite uncomfortable today.

It js just so random though.

Hi op, I'm in the Peri club too and get javelin arse, just the short ones that take your breath away. Oh the joys, my cycle is up the spout and my migraines that I've successfully controlled for 30 years are making a comeback 🙄

minipin · 10/09/2022 10:17

Hi, an asthma inhaler can help shirt term if you have one.

It's like you just don't know what to expect one day after the next ..

Sorry to hear about the migraines, they can't be really debilitating.

My cycle has been normal until about 3 months ago, but then I did start hrt so it could be that. I had short very light bleeds past 2 months and now just terrible pms symptoms but only 2 days of spotting. And then this shocking (literally) experience last night.

Now I'm wondering what other surprises mother nature has in store.

I don't, but I'm tempted to source one.

Do you know how it works to stop the spasms?

I feel like my bedside drawer is a good spot for one to live in now.

Um, you do know your uterus is your womb?

Hope you feel better soon.

Ducksurprise · 10/09/2022 12:08

My DH gets javelin arse as well so not just a female hormone/endo issue.

wizbit93 · 10/09/2022 12:42

I take paracetamol immediately (kept next to my bed!) and an inhaler. Generally lasts about 15/20 mins.
The worst one was the day after I had a heart attack. I was on complete bed rest in hospital and wasn't allowed to move at all - that was blooming painful!!!

OMG this is me right now. Peri with all the symptoms, javelin arse morning of day 3 of period like clockwork and occasionally mid cycle - have had to lie on floor at work and nearly been sick with the pain can be up to an hour, terrible periods v frequent, migraines - the lot. Have just started HRT which seems to be making my headaches worse but hopefully this will settle down, and otherwise I feel like I'm perking up mood and energy wise at least.
Such fun!

MrsMacnair · 10/09/2022 20:16

Been getting these for a several years, always at night. Was on another thread about this same subject ages ago and someone suggested it may be connected to periods but there was (at least for me) no rhyme or reason for it.

I am now post menopausal but still get night attacks once in a while and I’ve finally realised it only happens if I am constipated.

Do you suffer from constipation with your IBS ?

Jenasaurus · 27/11/2022 02:35

I know this is an old thread from September, but I did a search as have woken up in agony with a stabbing pain in my bum. I took a diazepam that I was prescribed for anxiety for flying and its gone! Just wanted to share in case others are regular sufferers, its a muscle relaxant so I guess thats why and not sure you should have it regularly as its addictive but I get these attacks a couple of times a year and always at night when I am trying to sleep, so will mention to my GP of the success I had with this as it really is a miserable condition

isthismylifenow · 27/11/2022 18:21

That's handy, although I don't have a stash to hand. I had another bout this week so I think it's pms related.

Muscle relaxant does make sense though.
